2006 Used TSX and dealers
Hey everyone,
I need a bit of advice here. Some of you may know that I've been looking for a used TSX. I just can't get a break from the dealers. Just now I got off the phone with one dealership, they have a 2006 TSX with 34k miles for $21k. I've seen some with 14k miles going for $19k. I offered them 18 and they refused it. Two weeks ago I tried to negotiate another one which listed for $21k and they dropped it to 20k but wouldn't budge past that. KBB lists the 06 TSX's trade in at $15,500 but I doubt even the best of the best are getting that. Is my offer unrealistic? I've been doing most of the communication via email since most of the dealerships are a quite a distance away. Is person to person the only way I can make a good deal? I would appreciate any insight anyone may have on to how to close the deal. I don't want to get a new TSX because of the pinging noise but I also don't want to spend $21k on a 3 1/2 year old car when they are selling new for $26,500.

Your offers aren't unrealistic. You should talk person to person, but it's not the only way.
You should look at buying one from someone other than the dealer. Dealers always try to screw you over. I got a 2006 with 35,000 miles and navi that was beautifully maintained for $19,000 back in November. I probably could have got it cheaper, but it was the color I wanted and only about an hour away from me, so I jumped on it.

I paid ~$26K for a 2006 with 5K miles, but two years ago (April 07). So $21K seems way off.
Here's what I think - 18K sounds reasonable, but because you are not there in person they will opt to sucker someone who is physicallly there. Basically they are betting someone else will walk thru the door and pay more, so why give the best bargain (and least profit) to an e-mail.
I used to sell Acuras back in the dark ages (1990). So this was before internet and such, but still a customer physically there was always taken more serious as a buyer than someone on the phone. Because someone on the phone was likely just shopping you against another dealer.
If you want the best deal, I'd find one you like and show up in person to hammer it out. They are more likely to go with $18K if the knew for sure you might leave with the car.

I recently purchased a certified used 07 TSX with 18k miles for $20,600 but this was only after complaining to the manager and threatening to report the dealership for bait and switch sales tactics. I'm not sure if I would have gotten that price had I not complained but in the end it worked out. Just be patient and persistent and do everything in person and it will work out.

Thanks everyone for your help. Hopefully something closer will come up in the next few weeks so I can do a face to face. Skopiec and Kingofthesouthga you both got a heck of a deal there.

Npolite,
Used car prices have firmed up the past 2 months. Dealers are reporting people are taking a closer look at 2-3 year old cars compared to buying a new car.
I was looking (for a friend) for a M35x 2 months ago. Auction prices have gone up $2,000. since early January 2009. I was told a lot of new car dealers are showing up at auctions to buy cars to fill up their used car inventory. These new car dealers are competing against the used car dealers for cars.
2006 TSX's with 25,000-30,000 miles are going for $ 17,000 at these auctions. That is why they said no your offer of $18,000.
I am seeing certified 2006 TSX's with asking prices of $20k -$22k in NY/NJ area. Davis Acura in PA has one for $19,888 with 16k miles.
Hope this helps a little.

I got mine '05 last year (Jan'08) with 34000 miles (55000 KM) for $24900 Canadian, which equals just over 20K USD for it at a dealership. So you might be a little low for a dealership.

The TSX is holding it's value well.
I was allowed 14k on a '04 trade-in with 44,000 miles. The dealer expects to realize a profit margin of 3-4k on a late model used car. So, that would make the retail price of my '04 around 17-18k.
To the best of my knowledge, the gross margin on used cars generally exceeds the gross margin on new cars. But, new cars used to sell easier and faster. I wouldn't be surprised today that many new car dealers sell more used cars than new cars and gain more revenue from used car sells than new car sells.
The environment was more favorable for the buyer about a year ago that it is today. The 1G TSX was a "limited edition" car. It is no longer made and will continue to hold its value well because it was a good value to begin with. And, although I think the 2G TSX is a lot less appealing, the 2G TSX has been the bright star in the Acura lineup in regard to sales.
I would search far and wide for a used TSX for sale be owner. There are few of them, as well, because most everyone that buys a TSX is satisfied with the TSX. And, there are not many estate sales when it comes to the TSX. But, a private sale is not as likely to reflect the renewed interest in used cars as a dealer sale.

check out carsense. I bought mine from them, 2006 TSX, non-navi, 26,500 miles for $22K, in Dec 2007. I am sure now you can get it for lot lesser.
My co- worker bought a new 2009 TSX for 26,500 plus tax etc..she paid 28,300... from the Ardmore Acura.

So offering 18-18.5 isn't really low on a non-navigation model. Well I found one today so we'll see if I get it later today.

Your offers are reasonable to a degree. All depends on what you're getting with the car. As stated, the internet is being used as a haggle tool and people are viewed less likely to purchase a car via e-mail. In person shows you're serious enough to show up and then the salesman feels he can work his magic on you to get what he wants...obviously you're in control here lol.
The TSX is a great car that holds it's value without any problems, esp in the newer models. I bought my 08 CPO 24.8 OTD in Oct 08, non-navi. Just be sure they know you're a serious buyer who doesn't play games...if they try to jerk you around then walk out. They will call you back and try to get you back in to work out a deal after a couple of days. I think if you show true interest and are standing firm on your ground of getting a car with a good deal then you should be fine.
Points of interest/comparison from VA for you:
05 $16.2K- http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...092751184.html
06 $16995- http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...091210252.html
$21K - http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...094184893.html
$17,895 - http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...094729878.html
$17K - http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...090019074.html
07 $21.5K- http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...092975155.html
Those are all the asking prices which means there is room for negotiation too man. GL on your hunt!

Well just got back. I couldn't have been more obvious that I wanted the car. I was offering cash to buy the car and the service manager told the salesperson I was not even in the ballpark. Their asking price (wasn't listed yet on the internet) was $22k. I'll keep looking but may need to start looking closer at the Altima. I don't know if I can't negotiate or it's just my location but these dealers around here don't seem to want to budge on their prices.
#19
What about a 2006 Accord EX with leather ? Or a 2005 TL ?
Both of these cars can be purchased in the ballpark area of $17,000.
FYI, dealers do not care if you pay "cash". They prefer that you finance from them...another way for them to make more money.

Yep I know that they make more money with financing a vechicle, I was answering sortudo7's response about showing a salesperson I was really interested in it. I'm looking at some used 06 Accords but we'll see, I'm having the same kind of problem with pricing on these too. The TL I don't want as it is a 6 cyl.
#21
What prices are you getting for the 2006 Accord ? And what model ?
The 2006 V6 Accord is a nice car, 244hp and runs on REGULAR gas. Consumer Reports road tests show there is only 2 mpg penalty compared to the 4-cylinder engine.
Their tests also show the 2006 TL gets the same real world mpg as the 2006 TSX. Of course, this depends on driving style and whether you do a lot of city driving. City driving penalizes a 6- cylinder engine compared to a 4-cylinder engine.
I can get upwards of 32mpg (2006 TL) on 100% highway driving at @70mph......but I get whacked doing city driving, something like mid-teens. It really sucks to wait 30-45 minutes on some days to enter the Holland Tunnel.
I was seeing 2007 Honda Accord LX's with V6 engines with asking prices of $14,999 at a few Honda dealers back in 2 1/2 months ago. Prices have crept up since then.
A local dealer (Potamkin Honda in NYC) is selling a 2007 (not 2006) LX V6 with 11,000 miles and is a Honda Certified car. Price is $16,788.
Paramus Honda has a similar car with 23,000 miles with a price of $15,566. Also a Honda Certified car.

What dealers are you dealing with? Just so you know, the Piazza Dealerships aren't going to budge.
I would try Castle Acura here in DE, they might actually budge. I know they have a few on their lot too. castleacura.com

I paid $16k for an '06 no nav with 28k in mid-Feb from a used dealer who purchased it from Honda Finance. Even he said then that prices were going back up on used cars. People have figured out that they are better deals.

npolite - If you are willing to make a trip over to jersey no more then 10 minutes over the Ben Franklin bridge is Elite Acura. I purchased my 04 there and have been quite happy. They have a couple 2006 tsx's currently in stock as well. Don't mind the internet prices too. Once you get to the dealer you can work out a much better deal in person.

Ok I've got this one dealer down around 18,500, but the dealer is a good distance away. What do you think about this email?
"I talked to our Sales Manager and he is willing to make a sale with you with a deal hovering around the $18,500 you need to be at making you happy."
Without sounding too arrogant, should I ask for a breakdown and final pricing? I just don't want to drive 150 miles and the sales manager thinking I will cave in and buy it at a higher price just because I drove 150 miles. I'd be throwing tables if they screwed me at a deal like this and not driving with the car back. Should I just forget about it and not bother?

If you are serious about doing the deal, call or email them and let them know that. Give them your real offer (not "around 18,500") and tell them if they accept it, you will put down a deposit today, and pick up the car this weekend, pending test drive/inspection etc. Dealers get many many non-serious offers and leads over the internet. If you are a real buyer let them know!
They can fax or email you a copy of the bill of sale which will be used, spelling out taxes, fees, etc, so you know the final "all-in" price. Use a credit card to put down a deposit so you can bail if the car is a lemon. I wouldn't go 150 miles unless I had the final price in hand. Have your own financing or cash available if possible.
I bought both of my TSXs from dealers through the internet (one new about 100 miles away, the other used about 1000 miles). The above approach has worked well for me.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Try Apple Acura in York,PA.
its not that far, but not sure if they have the car you want.
but I have been there before to test drive and also many times for the service my car.
they are very nice.
way better than piazza acura..they act as if they are the only acura dealers in the world!!

I appreciate the offer Matt, but I want a car that is stock (not even tinted windows). I'm not into all of the mod stuff. When my cousin gave me her Integra, her ex BF riced the Acura logo with a red A. I wanted to rip that sucker off but was too cheap to pay $30 for a regular logo. I swore I would never touch another car that wasn't stock again.

Thanks but I really am not interested in that car.
Well the Acura dealership now threw a $400 processing fee in the mix. I'm going to tell them no thanks. It's going to bring up the price to close to $19k + TTL for a non-navigation model and I have a feeling that I'm going to be taken for a ride since I live far away.

According to the salesguy in Virginia there is a $399 processing fee mandated by the state. What I have been reading is that this is dealer imposed and is not required by the state. Is this guy putting me on or is it a required fee?

So the price even with the $400 processing fee still looks ok. I don't know it seems for an almost 4 year old car $19k is still a lot to shell out when a new one is selling for $26.5. Maybe I am bad at negotiating
.
If only Honda would fix the pinging noise on the new one, I would get that instead. Otherwise if I go new my list of cars is not that great:
1) Sonata
2) Camry
3) Altima
For some reason the Altima insurance is super high. It's almost as much as I was paying for my 95 Integra last year when I sold it. I do not like the Civic (interior console) or Accord (size, overall design) so Honda is off the list.

Camry is too soft of a ride and a little too much body roll. I must admit it's very quiet. Sonata is a good car but you will get dinged in resale value.
Take a look at the redesigned Mazda 3 that just came out.
What about a 2006 Infiniti G35x if you are not too sensitive to
gas mileage ?

I won't touch Mazda because they use Ford parts. Also I don't like the smiling front end, what were they thinking?

it's a car-drive it
we owned a 1991 Mazda MX-6 GT, bought new. When we sold it, it had 250,000+miles with the original turbo, engine, transmission, clutch and ran excellent. The new owner had to repaint it and get new seat covers but nothing mechanically had to be done.

If you don't need a car immediately, then just wait for a suitable TSX to come to market. Remember that this car was produced in relatively small volumes (25k-30k per year). To put it in perspective, more accords were sold last year than TSXs were sold during the entire 1st gen production!
There is a limited supply of these cars out there, and only a small amount are for sale at any given time. In addition you want a specific year, options (AT, navi etc), color, mileage it will further reduce the pool of potential buys.
Be patient and pore over cars.com/ebay and local acura dealers sites. Your prices are reasonable, you just to find someone willing to deal. Remeber that dealers costs on used cars can vary widely. A dealer who bought a car on a lease turn in on a high residual has less room to work with than a dealer who got one cheap at auction.

TSXFL, I appreciate the comments. I sold my Integra over a year ago so I haven't been in a hurry to get a car yet. I'm just sick of not having one. I haven't found a new car that I really like, most of the new cars including the Accord, I have difficulty seeing out the rear driver's window. I've been saved many times from sideswiping someone looking through that window so it is a deal breaker if I can't see out of it. The TSX is perfect in every way, with the exception of the leather (I don't think I'm going to like it) and the pricing. I haven't purchased a car in 12 years, and I may be way off here, but to me I still think that $18.5 for a CPO is a lot of money for an almost 4 year old car.
