2006 Used TSX and dealers
#41
I agree that $18.5k is a lot of cash for a used car, really a testament to Honda/Acura's rersidual value. I ended up buying new over used a few years back as the used prices were insane.
A quick perusal of cars.com shows plenty of 2006 TSXs for sale now in the $15k to $18k range with reasonably low miles.
Remember that you are paying a premium for CPO, if you are willing to look beyond CPO's, prices get much better. Just be sure to run CARFAX/Autocheck on anything you're looking at. When I was shopping a few weeks ago I couldn't believe how many salvage cars are floating around out there.

I live just outside of Philly and the prices are a bit higher ~ $18-20k. Any of the ones cheaper than this are usually with 50k+ miles. The car I have been looking at has only 24k and a clean Carfax report. Part of me is saying go for it since I have had problems with the windows and part of me is saying it's already a 4 year old car. Damn..I'm back to square one again

So do you guys think it's a worthwhile deal? I really don't care for the leather or luxury value, I just like the design of the car. Is there anything being released for 2010 that may be similar?

Update: So the salesguy quit the dealership and before I realized it the car was sold. I'm going to look at one today, although didn't get confirmation on the pricing, but they didn't flat out say no at $19k (06 auto with 18k miles) like some other dealers so we shall see. If someone has autocheck could you run the check on vin JH4CL96846C012552?
Thanks

Thanks for the update. I was able to buy the autocheck and the car came up clean. The sad part is that I went to Bridgewater Acura in NJ and the car wasn't detailed. It had huge gashes in the bottom of the bumper and one of the black plastic pieces near the foglight was cracked. There was also a huge foot long scratch in the back bumper that was touched up with paint. Also part of Curry Acura's logo was still stuck on the back of the car (which why I despise any dealer who puts them on). There were a few other scratches that were touched up. I don't expect the car to be 100% scratch free but at least the font and back bumper should be fixed. I drove close to 80 miles for nothing and they asked me if I would come back if they would fix them. I'm still opened as long as they do but they need to commit to a price and not say "Let's see what we can do"
My patience is wearing thin... this car buying has taken too long and I think I'm going to take a hard look at a base Sonata for now until something new in either a Civic or the next gen TSX arrives in a few years.

That sucks. I live 10 minutes from Bridgewater Acura.
There have to be more in the area that meet your needs. What exactly are you looking for? There are a bunch of dealers in the NJ/PA area and I know Precision Acura in Princeton has some TSXs on the lot. That's where I go for service and will actually be there on the 18th for an oil change.

FWIW, I did all my negotiating by email before I even stepped foot on the dealer's lot. Acura of Ocean is where I got my CPO TSX back in 2005. They were easy to deal with over email/phone, and I got about $3000 off asking price. It took a few months to find what I wanted at the price I needed, but it did eventually happen.

Maybe try working on this one, if you like royal blue pearl that is.

It's been tough trying to find what I want which is a Silver or Carbon Gray Perl auto with a gray interior. I don't want to spend over 19k on an 06. I would spend 20k on an 07 but I've been having a hard time also getting dealers to drop their prices. They are asking almost 21 on most web sites for the 06.
I took a scan of most of their cars and most of their bumpers had dents on them. So much for their CPO process. I doubt they even change the oil in the car. When you see one you say ok it's a mistake but when you see a bunch of them then you know something is up.
I was looking at another Silver/Silver TSX at Boardwalk Acura, they salesguy flat out told me that "We can't discount the car thousands of dollars like you want", I was offering $19k, they wanted $21k.
I'm thinking I have bad negation skills via email.

That was a great deal on it but also the prices have really tightened up with the economy. It isn't the best time to buy a used car (as was the opposite case back in 06) but I don't want a 2nd gen TSX either with the knocking noise.

it's a car-drive it
I hope when I sell my 06 in April 2010, the resale on it is excellent. It received some dings on the bumper the other day thanks to a run-away shopping cart. I now doing the touch-up paint procedure on it. I recently had the car in for service-they complimented me on how well maintained my car was. It just hit 80,000 miles last night. My next car is either a 2010 tsx or the TL with 6MT.

Yeah I'm trying but feel like the guy on the left at the moment. Bridgewater just sold the TSX that I looked at yesterday. I guess people are stupid enough to pay for something without actually the repair being done.

I drove by Clinton Acura this morning on my way to see my sister race, and saw that they had a bunch of TSXs for sale up in the front of the lot. If I recall correctly, Clinton Acura doesn't have any inventory search on their web site, but Acura.com and other sites would list them. Take a look and see if there's anything there that interests you.

Ah, I didn't know that. I've never actually been there. It's a pretty small dealership, so I can see them being a little tough on price because their volume is probably fairly low.

The guy from Boardwalk Acura said he couldn't meet me at $19k because they owed more than that for the car....somehow I don't believe that.

Consider buying your 2006 TSX from a Manheim auction in NJ or in PA. Be patient for the right one to come along.
Here's a link to a preowned dealers/reputable auction buying service for you to check out:
http://highline.impacthosting.net/auction.asp
You should be able to buy a 2006 TSX (30,000-35,000 miles) for around $ 16,500. plus auction fee of @ $350 and @ $825. to the auction buying service. Total before sales tax and DMV fees would be about $17,675.
You would only get what's left of original warranty. The trick is to find someone who would be experienced and thorough in inspecting the car at the auction. Items to look for are paintwork, worn tires, scratches, dings, smoker car, etc.
The buying service would also get the VIN before the auction to run it through CarFax and AutoCheck.

npolite,
If you decide to buy from Manheim, you need to be patient and wait for the right car(s) to come along. Some auctions are well stocked with TSX's and some are not. The best ones are ones where American Honda Financial has hundreds of Honda and Acuras to sell on the same day. This gives you more selection and slightly "softer" auction prices.
You can get a good car here if you have patience and a reputable buying service/used car dealer who is looking after you and not just wants a quick 300-800 dollars from you. Some used car dealers will only make a quick inspection. Find someone who really knows how to weed out the abused cars from the decent ones.
You will see used car depts. of new car dealers also bidding at these Manheim auctions.

cchabot and onebadtsx, did you purchase it as a CPO? Of all the dealers and prices that I have seen at least with the 06 CPOs they have been hovering about 20k. I really don't want a BMW (maintenance) and the Infiniti G35's are going for 22-24k for an 06 around my area. The 06 TL's are actually the same as a TSX around here.
I haven't had one email from Montclair or Boardwalk Acura so I guess there is no dealing with them.
I just hate waiting...I the selection of cars in the color combination are dwindling at the moment.

Check out the link below on this car. It is a CPO car and it came from a Manheim auction in PA. You will find your car and at a price you want. Like I suggested earlier, check out the used car dealer I posted above.
You would not believe what the Infiniti dealer paid for the car below. You can save a couple thousand easily if do your research.

As you will see, they are not some run of the mill used car dealer. They will work with you to locate and buy your car.
You tell them exactly what you want and they can get it for you. Some used car dealers will even bring you into the auction so that you can see the actual cars with your own eyes. You would have to pose as their transport driver and behave because Manheim does not allow outsiders inside.
You could have purchased the Infiniti I posted for you for MUCH LESS than your budget of $ 19,000. Yes, MUCH LESS
Maybe some members here can chime in and guess what the auction price was. It wasn't $ 19,000.

Take a look at this TSX. It is also from a Manheim auction.
http://montgomeryvilleacura.com/Vehicle.aspx?v=2133235
You could have bought it for much less than $19,000. The key is to get someone you can trust to thoroughly inspect the car before bidding. It would cost to maybe 300 dollars to get a FULL 4-5 hour professional detail if you do not like what was done by the seller.
You may even get a car that still has more than 6/32nd's of tread depth left on the tires.
This Acura dealer liked the car enough to buy it and put it up for sale in the pre-owned dept. Less than 22,000 miles on the odometer.

Sorry, I do not have easy access...I have to ask used car dealer(s) for current prices. I can tell you the G35x I showed you was purchased for $ 17,000. Yes, only $17,000 !!
I did have some prices earlier in the year when I was looking to buy a car for myself and for a friend. Auctions prices have gone up compared to the lows of Nov.-Dec. 2008.
You will be able to buy a nice low mileage 2006 TSX in the range of $16,000-$17,000 plus auction fee and buying service fee.

With that said I came across 2 TSXs today from Bridgewater. One is an 07 with 20k miles (from FL) and the other is a 06 with 32k miles (from MA). KBB private sale is listing the 07 at 20,500 (they are asking 23,000) and the 06 at 18,500 (they are asking $20,000). Do you think I should try to negotiate around these prices? I would rather get the 07 since it is one year newer and hasn't gone through the rough winters in MA. What are your thoughts?
There are two 06 TSX at Montgomeryville Acura which I may go tak a look at but thaey have 38k miles and I didn't even hear back in two days since I have submitted an online query.

The 2 cars from Bill Vince's store are "fresh" inventory. I would say they will not be too aggressive in pricing since the 2 cars just came in. If they were sitting on the lot for over 2-3 months, they would be more open to entertaining offers at a deep discount.
It depends on what they paid for the 2 cars. It wouldn't hurt to start your offer(s) at the KBB private party prices. CPO cars are increasing popular these days compared to brand new cars. Do not be surprised if they give you a firm no.
As I mentioned earlier, a lot of new car dealers have been aggressive buyers of pre-owned cars at auctions. I was seeing 2006 Infiniti M35x's going for $19,000 at the start of the year. The same car would sell for $ 22,000 today at auction. The Infiniti dealer would then mark up the same car to $27,000.
As to the Acura CPO warranty, a dealer has to inspect the car "properly" for it to qualify. Some dealers cut corners here. Do all 4 tires have at least 5/32nd's tread depth left ? Do all the front and rear brake pads have at least 50% pad left ? A new set of tires or new brake pads (with rotor resurfacing) is not cheap....
If you buy a car from a Manheim auction, you can buy a Acura Care extended warranty online (via Acura dealer) for less than 900 dollars and get 3/36k additional coverage. You would need to time it with when the original warranty expires since coverage starts from the day you buy the warranty.

I took a closer look at the 2007 TSX from Florida. It would be safe to say the dealer paid around $19,000 plus auction fee and shipping fee from Florida to NJ. This would give them a cost of around $20,000.
You would have to add the CPO warranty cost and any reconditioning/repairs performed by the service dept. Ask the saleperson to show the the work order for any reconditioning/repairs done.
Taking into account all of the above, I do not think they would accept any offers below $ 21,500., especially on a car they just bought.

Thanks for the information Dan. I guess the 07 will be out of the question but at least I can try. The 06 still may be a bit promising but you are correct it is new so they may not budge, yet it is getting near month's end so maybe they will try to flip it quickly. The auction thing I'm a bit hesitant on because I really want to take a look at the car and inspect it and this won't be possible for every car within an auction.
I know when I visited them last time that quite a few cars had gouged bumpers so I know that they are skimping on the checks.

Hey everyone,
I need a bit of advice here. Some of you may know that I've been looking for a used TSX. I just can't get a break from the dealers. Just now I got off the phone with one dealership, they have a 2006 TSX with 34k miles for $21k. I've seen some with 14k miles going for $19k. I offered them 18 and they refused it. Two weeks ago I tried to negotiate another one which listed for $21k and they dropped it to 20k but wouldn't budge past that. KBB lists the 06 TSX's trade in at $15,500 but I doubt even the best of the best are getting that. Is my offer unrealistic? I've been doing most of the communication via email since most of the dealerships are a quite a distance away. Is person to person the only way I can make a good deal? I would appreciate any insight anyone may have on to how to close the deal. I don't want to get a new TSX because of the pinging noise but I also don't want to spend $21k on a 3 1/2 year old car when they are selling new for $26,500.

I have a 2006 TSX with navi, 55,000 miles on it. I went on KBB just for the heck of it, and even if i go with "fair" condition, it says it's worth $14,800. I'm amazed. That was private party value. The car is still in great condition. Still smells "new" inside, as commented by people that have been in the car.
But bottom line - I think these cars have held value very well. So used might not save you all that much.

Well just got back. I couldn't have been more obvious that I wanted the car. I was offering cash to buy the car and the service manager told the salesperson I was not even in the ballpark. Their asking price (wasn't listed yet on the internet) was $22k. I'll keep looking but may need to start looking closer at the Altima. I don't know if I can't negotiate or it's just my location but these dealers around here don't seem to want to budge on their prices.
