whirring AC

great forum first of all.
I have a problem, its a whirring sound that comes on when i turn on the AC.
its not constant, its pitch is higher when i accelerate.
mechanics at the dealer changed the compressor a year ago and the noise seemed to go away, actually it got very quiet, but still there.

another question.
i have 138k miles and my manifold is cracked. i couldn't pass inspection and the dealer told me to pay up.. i went to another place and passed it there.
my inspection is coming up in few months, and i will be doing it in CA.
i've read about the extended warranty.. but my title is salvaged.. would my car qualify?

not sure about the salvaged title thing.....but the dealer should have set you up right away. i'm not sure it matters if it was in a wreck or not. what if the whole wreck was the rear end? i mean they have no way of knowing. should be covered tho....call them and make sure they know wtf they are talking about. i hope there is more than one acura dealer around you.

i am still having promlems with the noise from AC.
I am afraid that it is a compressor, but am not sure.
this is the noise it makes when i turn on ac, .. rlrlrlrlrlrlrl.. if that helps.. and it's pitch relates to the RPM's..
i also hear a dull knocks that seem to be random..

when i turn off AC, things are fine.. fans in the interior run fine.. this is only happends when i turn on AC.

it's normal for the AC to make a little bit of noise.. when I have my AC on, I can hear my compressor kick on and off about every 10-15 seconds.. it's not very loud or noticeable, but you'll hear it if you listen for it.. the AC has an expansion valve that opens and closes to save the compressor from constantly running.

what you're describing sounds more like there could be something wrong with the fan or fan motor.. higher RPMs means the car is going faster, which brings more air into the fan causing it to also move faster and give a higher pitched "whirl" sound.. I'm not an expert or anything, just my two cents

I have a similar whirring noise when I start up the AC. It is directly related to the RPMs but after I get through a couple gear changes or vary the RPMs a bit, it goes away. It is pretty strange, any ideas?

does anyone know how easy the compressor clutch should spin inside the compressor pulley?
when i try to turn it by hand, its pretty hard to spin.

has anyone replaced their compressor ?

My AC has also been noisy and at times, the whole car appears to be shaking. I am actually suspecting the radiator fan motor that I believe turns on when the AC is turned on. Have not been able to confirm this. Does anyone know if the radiator fan motor is supposed to turn on when the AC is turned on?

Update: My radiator fan was definitely causing the problem. It eventually died and I thought the car had fixed itself. Since that never happens I checked under the hood and the fan motor was blowing the fuse. Had the fan replaced today for $350 and AC and fan is working great. Oriniginally thought it was the AC compressor and had a repair shop quote me repairs for $1600 Needless to say I won't be going back there anytime soon.

Compressor (clutch face) should turn easily w/ a slight resistance as each piston reaches full compression. You should be able to turn w/ tips of your fingers on the clutch plate. If you feel any grinding or coarseness, it could be a bad clutch bearing. Note, the clutch bearing turns all the time both when AC is on and off, however the AC load might change the amplitude of the noise when AC is on.

My 2.5TL, recently purchased, makes a whirring, whinning sound particularly at rpms around 1500-2000, but noticeable elsewhere. Noise disappears when AC is OFF. I'm going to try adding a couple of ounces of PAG.

good luck

PAG must be injected into the low side AC port w/ an oil injector tool. I haven't done this yet. I'll post when I've installed the PAG.
