Whirring sound

Okay, I've noticed this from the get-go with this car (had it for almost a month), and it's probably fine, but is the whirring sound normal going through the gears? I would liken the sound to a turbo, but it changes pitch with rpms. I don't know if it's the intake, or the transmission, but there is a sort of jet engine sound with the car. It actually sounds pretty cool, but just wondering if others experience it as well.

No...it's not the vtec.

the dealer is usually good about sending the service writer (if a former tech) or the trans tech for a quick ride around the block -tell you if its normal

also register with acura- there are a few recalls you want to be certain were done
1-800 382 2238 x5 need car VIN
ask if trans was replaced or oil jet kit installed

Do you have a S/C or intake or headers on the car? If not, I dunno what that whirring could be.

All stock, but there is an oil jet kit. Do those make noise? Fluids are good, and when revving in park you don't hear it, so that rules out a PS problem (I would think). Must be transmission, so maybe it is the oil jet. I have to go to the dealer for a seat belt problem anyway, so will let them assess the sound. It's probably fine, but I drive with the radio off most of the time, so I hear everything. With the radio on, even at minimum volume level, you probably wouldn't even notice it.

sounds kind like you are talking about the tranny pump, when under load (aka in gear) it is making the whining noise, some is acceptable, but should not be excessive at all though

check the tranny fluid like 01tl4tl said, but really i think what you are describing is normal, i've had my car since 06 (i've got 167k miles now) and it's made that noise ever since, like fries said, when it's under load.

Tranny pump sounds like the most plausible explanation. My neighbor has a friend who is a certified Acura repair tech, but he never returns my text messages or phone calls Maybe I will catch him next door visiting some time.

I don't suspect fuel pump, since I don't think that fluctuates with RPMs; I think it is just 'on' or 'off', simply maintaining constant pressure within the fuel lines.

Funny, the sound reminds of my first car - a 76 Cutlass Supreme - when I installed a cheap stereo eq/amp, and you could hear a background hum of my engine RPMs through the speakers. It was most notable during the breaks between songs...on my cassette deck. Most of you guys are too young to relate, but good to know there is always a new batch of gearheads out there!

nope, fuel pressure varies with the pressure inside the manifold, but yes the pressure differential between fuel pressure and manifold pressure is constant
easiest way to seperate that noise is, is the noise at the back of the car or front of the car (if back then yes proably fuel pump)

also what is a TAPE??? , i only know CD's and iPOD's

Noise is definitely from the front. I've heard fuel pump noises before, mainly when (in some cars) you can actually hear the fuel pump pressure-up before you start the engine. Since fuel pumps are electric, they will power up when you turn the ignition switch to the 'on' position, before 'start'.

Of course, when you talk about tapes, you have to ask: cassette or 8-track?

yeah called priming, to build the fuel pressure back up, if it has leaked down any, and even then it should only do it for 2 seconds or so, just enough to reprime it

ethier one, especially the one called a 8-track

(tell you the truth i don't ever recall actually seeing an 8-track tape before, and for a player of it, seen one maybe once or twice )

but then again i am comfortable with a scantool on a car, as long as i am not locked out of the screen/system i want, then i get pissed (cause car manufactures won't let the aftermarket have access to it , to be able to repair the car correctly)
but i did grow up with a computer afterall

Hey thug, if it's air intake, you should hear it when revving in park, not just when rolling.

to test power steering pump- with engine running in Park:
you turn the wheel all the way to the stop one direction then the other- thats max load at idle- any noise will make itself known

trans oil jet makes no noise
