fan still on

anyone have a clue why my radiator cooling fan would stay on after i turn the car off? as some may know, i just changed the thermostat after an overheating issue. it hasn't gone above the 'normal' temp, and tonite is the first night since the change (which was a few days ago) that the fan stayed on after i turned the car off. it stayed on while i got gas for about 2-3 minutes, then shut off. then again when i pulled it into the garage and shut it off. this is psuedo baffling. it really has no reason to cool the engine since it isn't getting hot anymore. perhaps the overheat did something to the electrical? good Lord, let us hope not, i'll have to shoot myself. anyway, comments needed. thx all

Your car engine is dissipating excess heat .

It is perfectly fine. It is supposed to come on after you turn the car off sometimes.

Happens to me too...especially if I switch the engine off after an uphill drive (my apartment is on a hill). I guess that's normal.

ok, you'll like this one. as i was driving to town today, bout a 35 mile drive...i was maybe 5 miles from destination; a/c was on and i hit about 80 mph. now, all of a sudden the temp gauge, which was at normal, jumps to about 2/3, then back to normal, back to 2/3, back to normal. wtf??? well, then when i got to the stop light, it started to idle rough and low rpm's (bout 500). so, uh, wtf? so i parked it at friend's house. then just drove home with no a/c, doing 70 on cruise. no troubles, and after i parked it in garage, fan stayed on for like 15 seconds, then turned off. what in the hell is going on???

oh, ps, just filled up today and found out i got 24.5 mpg. it's goin up....what IS this car doing to me?

i'm more worried about the jumping of the temp gauge than the fan thing. i've come to terms with that.

what are the chances of the previous 'overheat' to have caused some damage to the plugs or wires? the rough idle when i come to a stop sometimes now bugs the hell outta me. and that jumping of the gauge makes me annoyed/worried too. what more must i change?

Mine will come on on a hot day in the sun WITHOUT the car even being turned on. As for damage, wires not likely, plugs possibly, other damage IS possible.

Or your temperature sensor could be whacked out...

Question how much is a new radiator?

My car started overheating, and the temp gauge starting going all the way to the "H"!! Then there was some smoke coming out of my hood. I figured it was the radiator and a leak!

Just wanted to ask some of you guys if you would know the price of getting a new radiator. I dont want to go to a mechanic and get jerked!!

i'm assuming that's internal. or is that something i could/should change? if it's not worth it, i won't do it. plus, there hasn't been any 'issues' for the last two days. but i have yet to drive it again in heavier traffic. 98% of the driving has been on interstates. knocking on wood that nothing more happens. still...that rough idle that occurs after the gauge moves makes me think it's a plug or some such?

I got a new rad off E-bay for like $200 SHIPPED, dealer wanted $700 (CDN). Have the entire cooling system pressure tested though to make SURE that's where your problem is, other wise just change everything, (t-stat, rad, rad hoses, heater hoses, etc, etc.) to make SURE you fix the problem. That's what I did when I did the swap, car runs just below half now on the temp gauge...SMOOTH....lol

Hey NY_2.5TL, Here's a new radiator for $137.08 (including shipping)

These guys sell good stuff. I bought mine from them. The dealer quoted approx $700.00 for as new radiator.
