Battery Issues

While doing my B16 service I checked the battery electrolyte level and found that it was low.

The non-sealed RDX battery does lose a small amount of electrolyte through evaporation and a greater amount through normal electrolysis (O2 and H2 gases created during charging are vented to the atmosphere). After one year of operation the electrolyte level was just above the plates.

If the plates become uncovered, the battery loses efficiency and the internal temperature rises, leading to further problems. Low electrolyte may be contributing to the battery issues RDX owners are reporting.

As a minimum the electrolyte should cover the plates. Proper service level is just to the bottom of the plastic split ring collars that extend down into the cells. Bear in mind that the green "eye" monitor shows status of only one of the six cells, others could be low.

My battery required about 150 ml to bring it up to service level; the amount missing from the distilled water bottle.

Caution: batteries contain sulfuric acid and vent explosive gases. Keep ignition sources away. Wear long sleeves, gloves and full face protection. Wash acid off skin immediately. Flush acid from eyes immediately. You are responsible for your own safety.

deionized water is good too right? My local parts store only has deionized water which has a pic of rad, battery and iron on it lol.

I topped up my preludes interstate battery yesterday.

Just topped up the water in my battery (I can't believe I just said that lol) and I think the RDX is already starting up a lot stronger. I too did have the water level a bit on the low side compared to the ludes. Will do some further testing tomorrow after I have let the car sit for 8 hours.

For those with start up issues top up and test, especially those that drive the rdx in hot weather.

Confirmed start up is a lot stronger and does not sound like a car with a dieing battery....
