I have a '99 CL with 85k on the clock. I just bought it in Feb of '06. On a fresh start, or sometimes even randomly, I have a tranny slip. I will be sitting still and pull out of a street. The tranny slips and then slams into gear. When she is warmed up I rarely get it. Should I unload the car before it gets worse, or is this normal for this car? What should I do ?

I read something on here about putting the Ebrake on when parked on an incline, but this seems to be something different......

 

I'm guessing that you have an auto 2.3CL. It could mean tranny failure in the future, but 3.0CLs are the ones that typically have the problem. The CL does shift at higher rpms when the engine is cold to warm it up, but nothing should be slipping.

But then again, maybe you should ask a more "seasoned" forum member because they know better than I do.

 

eeekkkkk. Sorry man, but it sounds like something in the tranny department is on it's way out the door. No CEL codes right?

 

those are the early symptoms of the trannyitis.mine lasted almost over 10k before it sucks man,not much you can do to stop the enevitable,good luck.........

 

Low hydraulic control pressure will cause this also. Have you checked fluid level?

If fluid level is OK, it's worth a try to drain AT fluid, remove AT pan, and replace the pump inlet screen. The inlet screen can become clogged leading to slipping and poor shifts. After replacing pan, refill w/ Honda ATF Z71.

If this doesn't work, I would start looking for a good low mileage used trans to swap into your CL. Many donor parts from Accords so price will be attractive, compared to a Honda rebuilt or aftermarket rebuilt. A quick check w/ car-part.com shows a reasonable price is ~ $1K. Not sure if 99 2.3L Accord has same transmission, but prices were lower, perhaps an aveage of $750. It would pay to find out if the transmissions are interchangeable.

Thanks TX, I will def do that. If it is fucked, then I am not sure if I should take a loss by selling her or just dump the $ into the tranny and keep her. I do love the ride.

 

search for hybridnrg. he has a 2.3 auto and has been thru 3 trannys already.

 

Ouch ! I noticed that it only does it when the car is cold. After she warms up I don't have any probs, and when it does happen, it is only from a dead stop.

Should I unload it ? Is there anything I can do to delay or temporarily stop it, just to sell it to a dealer ?

Of course my lazy ass still hasn't checked the fluid level............

I did find something online that says the Acura will cover the tranny for 100k ?

i got a 97 3.0 cl and my tranny started slipping and hard shifting around 107k miles i got it in da shop as we speak cost about 1424 to rebuild tranny i would suggest replacing right away insted of the possibility of making things worse

 

i beat the piss out of my broken tranny,blew everything,and now even the rebuilt tranny ain't right.she's going back in the shop but i'm afraid she'll never be the same.

Well, a few weeks ago I drove 'er around for about a half hour to warm the tranny up and then traded that bitch in for an '01 GTI VR6. Peace out peeps. New car, new forum.

 

I have an extended warranty, but without a code being logged by the ECU, the problem doesn't exist, even though it's verifiable by the dealer.

It's mentioned that the tranny shifts at higher RPM's when cold. What if your thermostat is toast and the car gets only 1/2 way to the 1/2 mark (okay, so that's 1/4 of the way total) after fully warming up? Will the vehicle still shift harsh and at high RPM's because it believes that it's still in warm up mode?

 

Mine ALWAYS only went to the 1/4 mark when it was fully warm, occasionally when I was hard on the gas without letting it warm up all the way it would get just under the half way mark for a bit then cool down.

Once I got my oil/transmission fluid changed (not flushed) it warms up to half way now. Also, my transmission shifts SO hot now that I got the fluid changed. It's got no shift shock except in first gear, and only if it shifts at under about 3000 RPM. I love it. Still slips when I pull out of the school parking lot though, oh well

 

I just bought mine ( 99' 3.0cl) 3 weeks ago and its doing the same thing, luckily I noticed on the first day that it was leaking transmission fluid. I took it back and they say they replaced the whole front axile. When I got it back it started shifting funny when its cold. I think it was the transmission in the beginning and they are just saying it was the axile. Should I make them take it back or just get the extended warranty for it? I like the car but Im not looking for a headache.

 

Technically, you're not supposed to be covered for pre-existing conditions when you buy an extended warranty, and if you try and use the warranty within the first few months, they will heavily scrutinize your request. I would be very careful about using a warranty to pay for a bad transmission when you bought it.

P.S., the dealer will love to tell you that buying a warranty will work just fine to fix the bad transmission in the car they just sold you. In reality, it's insurance fraud. Up to you--
