Engine light diagnostic on a ’98 2.3 CL?

I saw the post here (NOOB Post) but it’s titled codes for 3.0. Is the procedure the same for the 2.3 (manual)? Same pins shorted and same codes?

Thanks!

same, as far as I know.

If you have an Autozone or Advance Auto near you, they'll run the scan for free.

Ya I’ve read that, but I’d rather save the trip. Does anyone know if I should be using the connector under the steering wheel (I think there is one there) or the one behind the ashtray? I guess I could go to an autozone on the way home, but would rather just walk down to my car with a paperclip… BTW, I have a ’98 2.3 CL Manual..

Thanks Guys!

umm, just stop by Autozone. It will take less than two minutes, and you won't mis-interpret the code.

You need to use the service connector under the passenger side. It's a 2-pin (blue on 3.0) connector that plugs into a empty socket.

Jump that connection using a paper clip, put ignition to ON position (but don't start engine) and reference the code in the NOOB guide . All that's different is there is not misfire on cylinder 5 and 6 (obviously).

If all else fails take saiko_cl_duck's advise and goto Autozone. Good luck.

i would rather go to autozone and get the code, most of the time they can even help you in telling you what part needs to be replaced for the code.

So I put going to AutoZone on my to-do list for Sunday. I got in my car, made one stop at a hardware store,, got back in my car, started it up, and the CEL went off (and has stayed off). I guess it goes off by its-self if the problem does not persist?

Thanks!

Engine boggs sometimes on idle..

Recently I’ve noticed that my engine’s idle dips sometimes. I think it happens more with the AC on. It will go down from it’s normal 1K to 250ish,,, then recover back to 1K. I have a ’98 2.3 CL with 205K miles. Could it be a sign of something? Like an alternator that is starting to go?

Thanks!
