ABS light issue
ABS light issue
I have a 97 3.0. The car has been very good to me & I have found this site to be very useful. The most recent issue I have is with the ABS light.
I learned how to read the code from this site & it is code 4-4. However after researching this code, I am seeing conflicting opinions on which rear wheel sensor has likely gone bad.
From the perspective of sitting in the car, is 4-4 the drivers side or pasenger side?
Other notes about this condition, when driving in the rain or after the rain, the light typicaly does not illuminate. Sometimes I feel that anti-lock comes on when it should not - not during a skidding situation. However 98% of the time, the light is on.
When I changed to my winter tires, I thoroughly cleaned the passenger side hub & bearing hoping it would be an easy fix. It did not help. I did notice that the driver side appeared to have some exposed wire where the cable attaches to the sensor.
I would also appreciate getting confirmation that the honda accord 94-97 sensors are compatible. I have called a few wreckers but they all seem to think it is a high risk part to go with & suggest I look for somthing new. Opinions please. Used or new?
In ontario, I have found new rear wheel sensors for around 300. Honda wants 200 new. Naturally I would love to get a good reliable used part for as little as possible.
To all - thanks for your input & have a great holday!

Autozone.com manual says 4-4 is Left Rear wheel lock. LR is driver's side rear. You may need more manual info to diagnose this. It may not be a wheel sensor fault, but possibly an indication that the system is sensing LR wheel lock-up during braking. This could be real, such as sticking caliper or other mechanical problem. Or it might indeed be a faulty, but intermittent wheel sensor. This last seems unlikely, but possible.
Check ebay for wheel sensors. Only way to be sure about compatibility is to pull the old sensor and go to salvage yards. The 2.2 CL's are pretty much identical to Accords on ABS, but I'm not familiar w/ 3L V6's. The sole picture I found of modulator on AZ site shows the modulator on the pax side front wheel fender of engine bay. This modulator is same modulator as used by Accords and Acura 2.2CL's, however it is a mirror image installed on opposite side of engine bay. This may mean the wheel sensors are identical, or not. You might try looking for a 97 Accord wheel sensor on ebay and see if it looks correct for your vehicle.
Did you remove and clean the wheel sensor surface and the tone ring lugs? Stuff rag into sensor opening and turn wheel manually to clean tone ring lugs. This can sometimes fix a wheel sensor.
good luck
