97 2.2 Auto Whining noise from front end??
97 2.2 Auto Whining noise from front end??
Has anyone had a similar problem? I only hear it when the car is moving so I don't believe it's the alternator. It becomes noticeable at about 40MPH and the "frequency" of the noise gets higher as I speed up. It almost sounds like a tire whine but I don't see any abnormal tire wear or cupping. I'm concerned it might be bearings or even worse....the dreaded transmission. Any help or suggestions would be great.

ill reply here too =)
i had a problem very similar to that..ppl told me it was because my brake pads were worn but that didnt make sense to me because it sounded like it was coming from the engine. so i changed the brake pads anyways (they were worn) and havent heard the noise since =)

It does sound somewhat like a hum, almost like a tire hum. The tires are in good shape. I rotate them every 8K miles and they're only 20K old. It definately becomes more noticable the faster I go.

if its a hum its likely a wheel bearing. if it whines in park and neutral and increases pitch with the idle, its trans. if its just with the vehicle speed you're lookin at a fairly easy, reasonably cheap (compared to a trans) fix. good luck friend, I just did one of each to my wifes 97. my wallet is killing me!
It sounds like this is a good time to replace the front rotors and pads as well. It's my understanding that the 97 2.2 is a pain in the butt. Any tips on getting the rotors off and everthing apart?

Yeah, I'm actually getting this same problem fixed as we speak. My right front tire started to hum as I got up to around 40mph and I was assuming it was the wheel bearing; my Acura dealership also agreed it was the wheel bearing. The thing about Honda and Acura front wheel bearings is that they are press on's, so you need a specific type of hammer to get them off from what I hear. I was too lazy to jack up the car and attempt to get them off. It will cost you like $77 for the bearing and then whatever labor charges are.
Hopefully this helps you somewhat..

I got the same problem on my CL, well maybe worser. I noticed that when I start up from dead start it would make a low rumbling sound then from 1st gear - 2nd gear it shifted really rough and the rumbling sound would get worst, Then from 2nd- 3rd would shift smoothe, seems like only 1st- 2nd is bad. I was wondering if the problem was to do with my suspention or my drive train. may be both I wouldint be suprise
