I, like many other, have the a problem with the rear springs making a clunking noise over large bumps. While many say its the control arm hitting the fenderwell, it has been found that the sound could come from the springs "clapping" against each other. To fix this, Honda sells spring tubing to pad the springs. The pics will explain the rest:



The tubing itself. You'll need two pieces per wheel at roughly 3 dollars a piece from the Acura dealer (or maybe less at the Honda dealer).



The result of bad camber (this is from rotating the front tires, btw)



The red rectangle shows where the progressive part of the spring is. According to Eibach, the tubing should go on the middle two coils of the progressive part of the spring (highlighted in blue)



Finally the tubing on the spring itself.



What the spring looks like under normal load with the new padding.



And finally how the car sits with the new padding. It doesn't really sit any higher than without the tubing, which is a good thing.

All in all, this is an easy project that costs about 10-12 dollars. The hardest part of this project is probably jacking up the car (I went ghetto and used the stock jack).

did it eliminate the clunk entirely or was there still a slight "clap"?
and also about how much would u say it raised ur rear because i also have the neuspeed sports and the drop is perfect. =P

 

I haven't heard any noises as of yet. In terms of raising the car, it might have been raised about 1/8 of an inch, if that.

 

i will DEFINITELY be looking into this, i get the clunk and ive seen alotta eibach ppl complaining the last month or two on here about it as well. thank you for posting this info with pics.. much appriciated

 

does this problem fix eibach springs or stock springs as well? i kinda hear a clunking noise when i go over bumps as well....

 

I have Neuspeeds, and the original idea was for Eibachs, and H&Rs come with this stuff already. Get the point I think it can be used for everything, including stock springs, considering Honda developed this stuff to be used on regular cars.

from my experience, the noise is still there. as shown in the above photo, most of the spring still touch each other without any padding and metal to metal contact will still make noise. i used vinyl wire wrap, and it works great and much cheaper than the honda stuff. here is the pic of the wire wrap that you can buy almost anywhere. or

 

but would you have to wrap that around the entire spring? i think the honda one would be more efficient cuz its only part of the spring and it will prolly eliminate most of the sound if not all of it

 

well i just purchased 2 of these spring tubing things cuz they only had 2 in stock and i put them on. 1 on each rear spring. in either of the middle coils and the clunking is pretty much gone. im sure if i bought another for each then it would be totally gone but i can deal with it when i hit a reallly big bump. which i dont plan on doing =P i did notice the car lifted a little bit in the rear but i might just be imagining things =P anyways, thanks for the DIY man

 

with the wire wrap you have to wrap it around the part of the spring where they touch each other. with the wire tube, you can just slide it in. i dont own the first gen cl anymore, but i remember the wire wrap work just as effective as the honda stuff and its available almost anywhere. again, with the honda silencer vinyl tube, the noise is still there because some of the spring still have metal to metal contact. it will clunk when you go over bumps.

 

Wow...I have Eibach Pro Kit and Tokico Illumina set-up and its been making this clunking noise for a while now. I finnaly realize that my Eibach Pro Kit should have came with a rubber tube so that I can apply it to my springs, but unfortunately my spring did not come with some. Thanks for the adivce...I gotta try this.

Now about the tube...

Does the tube have a sluce in it so that it can be installed on the car without removing the springs? Or is this a job which requires spring removal?

 

Nevermind. I see that spring removal need not be accomplished.

 

is that a no to the need to remove the spring?

 

It has a slice in the tube for installation. Also has drain holes to let moisture out in case anyone was wondering.

Got that same problem with the noise, sounds like a bowling ball in the trunk or under the car when i go over bumps. I ordered two of these (about $7) and will give it a try and post the results.

 

That didnt work for me. I put two on the side with the clunking and it made no difference. My springs dont look that close for the rubbers to touch.

 

uh dude no offense to your suspension, but if your spring coils are hitting eachother you may wanna invest in some new shit. unless youre doing about 50 over giant speed bumps your coils shouldnt touch. from those pics it looks like they are a bit too close together. what brand are they. im only putting my two cents in cause me and my bro have a shop in ohio called hondacur (small plug) and we see that shit a lot.

 

Are you talking about MY car? The setup on there was the Neuspeed Sport springs and KYB AGX shocks. It isn't crappy hardware for starters, plus Honda didn't make the tubing for aftermarket suspensions; they made it for their own suspensions for when people encounter this clunking.

It's a hit or miss type deal. For some it will work, for others it won't. You don't have to go 50 for the clunking to occur either. For qstorm78, it could be due to the spring not being seated correctly in the spring seat/top hat, or it could be that the top hat isn't bolted tight enough to the car.

I was told it could be my strut mounts or bushings. The noise comes mainly from the left rear. And you're right, you don't need to be doing 50 to hear it. I hear it on just driving through the parking lot of entering the parking lot. Its becoming really annoying and i hear this pop/'cracking noise whenever i make a right turn. It comes from the left rear as well.

 

I just realized the pics on this thread went out a while back, so I've restored them. Hope this still helps someone.
