Transmission Slipping - Help Please

So after a CV shaft change, the transmission starting slipping between gears. I checked the oil, added more (as it looked a little low), all was well for a while. One day, pulling on the highway, the transmission just slipped into neutral and wouldn't shift into any stage (park, reverse, other gears). Actually putting the car is park would start a terrible grinding noise coming from the transmission.

So I replaced the transmission. Took a while, but apparently it can be done without removing the engine. Done.

This refurb'd transmission from the dealer has the exact same problem. It slipped into neutral and now won't go anywhere else. Performing a diagnostic on the computer system shows a P0118 (P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit High Input). This would, of course, point to the thermostat. I haven't replaced this yet... but c'mon. Would a faulty thermostat keep a transmission from running properly?

PLEASE... any ideas would be great help. I don't want to keep spending all this time and money on the car if its going to keep breaking down. I imagine this is an electrical problem since it's been identical with two separate transmissions.... boo.

I dont have much experience with problems with our trannies outside of busted Slave and Master Cylinders, (which would lead to low clutch fluid, which would lead to "dead clutch pedal".

is this a 5 spd or an auto?

I doubt that a bad ECT sensor would cause failure of the transmission. However, it's easy to check the ECT and see if it is indeed open or a wiring fault exists causing the high voltage input to the ECU.

It is possible you have a faulty ECU also, but this is much less likely.

good luck

Thanks for the responses. I've found the problem.

I bought the CV shafts from Autozone, where I now have a lifetime warranty on them. The right side CV shaft had an issue... the spring clip was missing. This is the clip that keeps the CV shaft seated in the transmission so it doesn't work its way out. The first time it just happened to take a few weeks to happen, the second time--a day.

Anyway, I've picked up a new CV shaft yesterday and am performing the transplant later. I can honestly say, I'll never perform CV axle changes without checking for the spring clip ever again.

I think the shop manuals specify replacement of the spring clip w/ each removal of the CV axle. Most (including me) don't do this.

good luck

I appreciate it, but the tranny is good. I happen to have two now, both in full working order (one, of course, in the car).

I replaced the CV axle today with a new one from Autozone. This time I felt it *click* into place. I made sure it did by pulling it out and doing it again. I don't think I'll have the same problems I did before.

A side note - the manual probably does say to replace the spring clip with the CV axle replacement. Autozone CV axles come with the spring clip in place, so no need to buy a different one.
