see this thread to remove your bumper support,.. it will be a breeze to put the lights back in when it's out,...just to sum up,. you remove the bumper support by removing two bolts on each side where the support connects to the car...

Anythings possible I guess.... The reason I ask is because, how do you get to the push pins that underneath the headlight?
Its harder to screw around with those push pins than it is to take off the bumper.
Ok, I don't have a 1st gen, but since most cars are the same...
Use a small straight (some weird people call them flat heads) screwdriver to pop up the inner part of the clip and if you have room, just pull that part all the way out (it won't break it). After that pull out the outer part of the clip.
If you don't think that the clip will clear the space between the bumper cover and the lights, just push down on the bumper cover or pull up on the lights (both at the same time may be easier to obtain the maximum clearance).
Both the bumper cover and lights should have some movement with pressure applied. Headlights usually use rubber grommets where they mount which allow for flexibility of the unit.
Last case scenario, use a pair of dikes to cut the clips and when your re-install, just use new ones. I got a bag of twenty five clips for cheap money off of an ebay store...
