Engine Swap

Hey Guys I am new here, and I have a few questions:
Whats the diff between H22a and H22a4, which is better, and what is a good price on one and from where.
How hard is it to install?
ONce in what is the first mod to put on?

I am in to only performance, I don't like neon or systems or big shiny rims, I want speed and handling. I want speed first though, so if any one knows where to buy a H22a or H22a4 which ever is better let me know.

By the way I have a 97 2.2

h22 and h22a4..they are the same thing just that the h22a4 is from the 97+ USDM preludes
the jdm engine code is h22a...people usually just say h22 ....
there are a lot of places you can get these motors at here are a few sites:
www.hondamotorsonline.com
www.nippon-motors.com
www.streetimports.com
there are a lot more sites but its late and i cant remember them

it is a straight forward swap...it is a little more difficult to do an obd1 swap than it is to do an obd2 swap..
as far as what your first mod should be all depends on you and what you want to get out of your car..i guess most peeps would say cold air intake...i would say nos or better yet turbo

hope this helps

Theres a couple more differences between an h22a an h22a4.
First of they are 3 basic versions of the h22 engine:

1.) h22a1; usdm closed deck obd1 190 HP DOHC VTEC found in '92-'95 Preludes.

2.) h22a; jdm engine usually obd1 when bought online, its a closed deck and puts out 200 HP. Other difference are a slighty more aggresive ecu which is very easy to chip, gearing is better on the 5 speed tranny and most come with lsd. The h22a can from preludes as well as accords.

3.) h22a4; usdm '97+ prelude engine has an open deck and puts out 200 HP. Its an obd2 engine. The sleeves have an frm lining which only allow you to use cast pistons, unless you resleeve your block. The stock ecu is a piece of junk and can't be used. The ecu comes with an immobilizer unit, so in order for it to work the ecu has to be used with the ignition unit and key from the same exact car the ecu came from. (Turbotk and I found this out the hard way). If you get an h22a4 try to get it from a base model lude. The sh model is a pretty difficult swap to get the tranny to work correctly.

Prices on complete swap for these engines which would include long block, tranny and ecu:

1.) h22a1: $1,750-$2,000

2.) h22a: $1,500-$1,850

3.) h22a4: $2,500-$3,000

Just in case your wondering other version of the h22 are:
h22a type s puts out 220 HP
F20b puts out 200 HP
and the h22 from the acccord euro r

So what did you use?

Didn't d98clturbo just buy the long block? What ecu did he use?

Actually.... there is one more h22a most people dont know about. It is also a h22a but it comes from the 94-96 accord sir and they are closed decked obd 1 but they have less aggressive tbody.... this is the one i ended up with... it puts out 190.

It means use an h22 head on an h23 short block. Benifits are you get an extra .1 liter. Everyone I know that has has attempted this "frankenstien" has had horrible realiablity issues. The problems that are encountered totally outway the benifits and in my opnion its really not worth it. There is an h23 vtec engine found in some model accords wagons in japan. If your using one of these then great but if you had to build your own its just problem after problem waiting to happen.

Deuce if you useing this setup then why don't post some pics. What pistons and rods did you use and with which crankshaft? Your going to have to put alot more info than I just have a frankestien engine.

AtlCl I had to use an usdm obd1 p13 ecu from a '95 Prelude vtec 5 speed. The obd1 h22 ecu did not have an immobilzer unit. You can also you an obd2 ecu from a '96 Honda Prelude vtec but its nearly impossible to find these ecus and when you do people want an arm and a leg for them.

How did you use the obd1 ECU with an engine that came with the obd2 ECU? I guess you had to redo the wires to make it fit. So, it seems that if you are doing this swap you might as well buy the obd1 engine since you will have to redo the wiring anyway to make it fit and this way you could mod the ecu.

Yeah the only thing we had had to change to run the obd1 ecu was the wiring to the ecu. You basically cut the obd1 ecu harness and splice every single wire to the obd2 harness. It takes a while but its not impossible to do.
