Brakes are smoking

My 97 2.2 CL has been sitting in the garage and has only been taken out once in the past month. I took it out for a spin today and everything seemed to be running fine until parked it and got out. Smoke was pouring out of the back left caliper and it was generating a significant amount of heat. I'm not sure what the problem is but I did notice that the e-brake was really loose. I know the e-brake works on the back two wheels so I figure it could be the problem but I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.

brakes usualy dont smoke even under high load/friction. Sure any liquid didnt get on em ? If its truely an issue with the brake rotors and the pads.....time to replace them asap.

Give me some symptoms

do you get brake fade ?
do your brakes feel mushy ?
when you stop do they make noise ?

Idealy, your car should stop on a dime with little pedal effort.

Although i have aftermarket rotors and greenstuff pads, the car should essentialy stop on a dime and the pedal should almost want to just clamp by itself when you apply decent pressure to it. I have to be carefull most times because if i stop to hard the abs kicks in on dry pavement and the car just comes to a stop so violently than it can injure my neck from time to time if im not ready for it. Other cars WILL NOT be able to stop in time if there behind me. Ive upgraded the proportioning valve, pads, rotors ( f and r ) with lude rotors ( rotor over hub swap )= you need to be realy realy carefull when braking.

This happened to our land cruiser when they replaced the brakes. They tightened the ebrake to tightly and smoke was just pouring out of the rear wheels when we drove it :/

well, my rear caliper on the left side stuck shut on the rotor when i pulled the ebrake and ihad to pry the piston / caliper loose. After replacing the unit it works great. Even when it was stuck shut, it never smoked only dragged the rear left tire

you can just use a screw driver to pop the line loose and then spray some lithium grease up in that biotch

I am having this exact same problem...minus the smoke. I can smell it, and the hand brake is real loose until the very end of it. I just got this car today, and my passenger side wheel is sticking I believe. What did you do to fix it? PLEASE HELP ME!

I don't know what your talking about. Plus, I don't take offense from people who don't use any punctuation and spell word, werd. I'm just looking for some help, so if there are any people here who aren't un-educated fuck nuts like this piece of shit willing to help me out I would be very happy. So, what might be the solutions to this? Thanks, James.

you guys.... your freakin parking brake is stuck on. Go and take the rear wheels wheels off, and pull the cable off the arm, and actuate the parking break on and off. if you cant by hand, there is something amiss. You will need to pull the calipers off, and push the piston back in, which the stuck parking brake will try and prevent. work everything around till its all nice and loose again. if you dont know what I am talking about, go to just brakes and get it fixed.

I just wanted some help on figuring out a place to start looking. I know absolutely nothing about cars, I'm poor, and just wanted an idea so I could possibly describe to someone else what the problem may be, or where to start. He told me he just reversed his car, and then pulled on the brake a couple times and that fixed it for him... Thanks for being a smart ass though, as I see you are in most of the posts you make, and I don't plan on being active here anymore.

actually you'd never need to take the caliper out, you just use a long flat screw driver and use it to push the cables towards the back of the car...... as soon as you do that yes wiggle them around and spray a shit ton of lith grease in there.
