Spark Plug Problem

Ok I have a question for you guys. last month i was driving on a highway and felt my car shake a little so I thoug nothing of it and pulled over to this shop to buy something. After I pulled of the stores driveway i heard a loud ass noise, it sounded liek i had 4 flat tires so I pulled over. The tires were just fine but when i opened the hood one of my spark plugs came off. I had to spend $120 to tow the car hom cuz there was no store in site that would sell spark plugs. Do you think this messed my engine or anything else. I'm scared to take this car in long trips now cuz i have a bad feeling. Let me know if this every happened to anyone else and why. Thanks

I'm sorry, but....please go into detail on HOW your spark plug could have just "come off"?????

even if it "unthreaded" itself, it still has to push off the plug boot and "just happen" to hang out by the engine for you to see it so blatantly.

let us know!

Well when i put the car in reverse to pull out of the store driveway and then sratred driving i heard a loud noise and it sounded like 4 of the tires were flat. When i got out and opened the hood i saw one of the park plug wire with the spark plug in it just haning out. This is exactly what happened.

dude that's wierd. sounds like it either wasn't installed right, or there's stripped threads.

torque wrench..

are these the original spark plugs? did you change them yourself recently? or did a shop?

have someone look at where your plugs screw in now, make sure the thread area is ok, hopefully only the threads on your plug got messed up.

I would replace aftermarket plugs after 50K miles, so 2 years is not an issue. Sound like the shop didn't tighten them enough. If the threads are intact, you can just re-install them. And like said above, use a torque wrench. and make sure the gaps are .044

Well the next day i took the car to a shop and they installed brand new plugs and as of now there is no problem. So i'm hoping it was that the mechanic that installed it before didnt tighten it enough. Thanks alot for your help guy.

it was the wires. our cars (3.0's) dont like aftermarket wires much. mine did the same thing, but it got worse and worse. more and more wires would pop off more often. so i finally said fawk it and replaced my brand new 10.3's for stock replacments. tho mine didnt start till i installed my bosch platinum plugs.

wilp, sounds like your plugs just didn't get along with your wires. He said his whole plug came out tho, while still attached to the wire.

Sounds like either it wasn't tightened enough, or it was slightly too small and under pressure just bam, popped out.

On a side note, what is the tq specs on the spark plugs?

That doesn't sound right. You might mean foot lb. I just replace my bike's plugs and it was 108in. lb., which translates to ~9ft.lbs.

did it dent the hood? i know that the pressure is pretty powerful from something like that. just make sure the plug wires are okay and that the threads aren't worn.

no luckly it didnt dent the hood. The tow truck guy came and tried to put the spark plug back in but he didnt brign the right tool. I even told him please bring the proper tool for putting a spark plug back in but ofcourse he didnt. Then he tightened it with a screw driver and told me to start the engine even after I told him that it will fly right back out. When i started the engine the spark plug just shot right at his stomach, i was like i told u so lol. Then he tightened it more and the plug didnt come back out again but i didnt want to take a chance to on driving the car for another hour so I just towed it.
