Actually, i think the act of handwashing seems to recreate the ancient rain dance. Because i know that as soon as i am done within 24-36 the heavens open up and the rain flows all over my perfectly clean car.

I take mine to the touch wash and over the summer on a good day ill do it myself. At the touch wash they do an excellent job and dry the car and vaccum the mats and wipe down the dash and windex all the insides of the windows.

I go to a carwash where they send my car down a guantlet of spinning blue rags. Then 4 illegal immigrants clean the hell out of it and do the tires and windows and all that, and it costs me about 6 bucks.

Very bad for paint, you may get ugly swirl marks as a result.

I don't buy that. I've had my car for two years and I take it at least once a week to the carwash. The paint looks as good as new. I've taken every car I've owned to carwashes and I've never had swirls or anything.

I think we had this discussion in another thread.

I somewhat doubt after years of autowashes like the ones you mentioned you dont have swirls in your paint. What color is your car? and Do you have any CLOSE pics of your paint reflecting direct SUN light?

Acura's / Honda's clearcoat is so damn soft swirls are almost inevitable to a certain degree. Careful and perfected washing techniques will keep swirls to a minimum, while careless washing, and brushing autowashes will increase your swirls and defects ten fold.

I detail a few co-workers cars for extra spending money (mostly on detail products). This guy has a black honda Civic i spent 5 hours detailing (polishing etc.) I got 90-95% of the swirls out with all that work. A month later he brings it back to me just as bad shape, as far as swirls are concerned, from just going through auto washes once a week! (None of the polishes i use just hide swirls I.e fillers)

BEETROOT I am not flaming you for stating your opinion, Im just stating mine. Some people like me,that detail cars, whether for enjoyment or a living, develops a keen eye for paint. Just like body shops tech's can tell what has been repainted on a car from 10 ft away, while a normal joe couldnt tell if its repainted from 10 inches away.

If you take a closer look on your paint in correct bright lighting im pretty sure you have swirls all over. Maybe you dont look for them like some of us do, so you might not notice as well as someone else. Also light color cars show less defects and swirls then dark colored cars which may be the reason swirls are less noticed if you own a silver or such.

I think detailing a car in general is very theraputic. When I detail a car, I dont really think about anything else. Once you step back and see the work you have accomplished on a car you just say WOW.

Yes handwashing a car is theraputic, I agree, but when I do that 3-step clean-polish-wax, I get sore all over. I'm getting old.

I rinse my car & let it soak, then with a moderate jet of water jet it off. First hand wash is a single pass (about 3 ft) per clean side of a soapy chenille sponge using the weight of the sponge only. The sponge is sprayed off so it is clean & tossed in a bucket of clean water. Prior to putting the used sponge in the clean water, I take the previously used sponge that's in the bucket & squeeze out the old soap & any dirt that might be in it & refill the bucket with clean water. I rinse the car after each section.
After this "preliminary wash", I clean the tires thoroughly & rinse down the entire car again. Then I wash the car again as above, but using some pressure this time. If I'm going to wax, I wash the car a third time.
Anal as hell, but after a year there are only a few light scratches on it, put on it by the body shop after doing repairs (idiots).
