Took the tape off after cleaning my headlights...$^@&*^!

I was wet sanding my headlights over the weekend, ran out of light, so i finished it off this morning. (used masking tape around the edges)

Little did i know, masking tape gets NASTY after getting wet.

So I go to peel it off, little sticky pieces everywhere. damnit.

So i get out my sponge, soap and water, and go to town on the "infected" areas.

I got all the tape off, but now my paint (where the tape was, and where i was scrubbing with a sponge) is all dull and scratched looking.

I didnt think viscously scrubbing with a sponge would take my clearcoat off!

Any suggestions? I'm kicking myself about now.

you didnt loose any clear coat, you just need to hit the area with some paint cleaner or polish and then wax or sealant over that should do the trick....

You could try hitting the area with some IPA or 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover.

i suspect he removed all the sticky residue with the scrubbing with the sponge....i believe he has hazed his clearcoat with the scrubbing...some mild polish and seal it back up with sealant or wax...

Some of you guys got me wrong here

All the sticky residue is GONE. But as vinnier said, I have hazed my clearcoat with all the scrubbing.

What can I use to get my clearcoat to shine again?

I took it to a local body shop and they wanted 40 bucks to "buff it out"

I have a 10" orbital buffer in my garage, what "compound" do i need to get this shit out?

Thanks guys.

Don't go at it with the 10" and a compound when you don't know what your doing ... you could make it worse .... do you have a detail shop around you .. should be a 10 Min .. $15 job.

Alex, delete this thread or something! It keeps popping up in my email inbox! You could always drive up my way one afternoon and we could take care of it.

go to autozone and get some scratch-x....its a mild polish, hit the area with the scratch x and a foam applicator and work the polish in until it starts to dissapear....repeat as necessary and follow up at the end with a wax or sealant....
