Porter Cable & UDM

I am intrigued by these two systems and the polish/wax kits online and am prepared to make a purchase. I detail my cars which consist of an 05 Chrysler Pacifica, 07 Porsche Cayman and an 02 Merc CLK 430- all black.

All of my cars have been maintained with my cheap black and decker orbital buffer that I bought in 1993 and elbow grease and non of my cars have any bad swirl marks or paint defects. I just polished and waxed my Pacifica this weekend with my B&D with Meguairs NXT looked at the shine and thought that it can't get any better than this.

Am I wrong? Will the Porter Cable & UDM machines make that much difference on cars that are in pretty good condition?

Well, you may actually think theyre in very good shape, but once you start maintaining them with a UDM or PC, you'll be very surprised at the differences.....

I completely agree with Patrick. I think you'll be very much surprised at the differences and what these tools are capable of. From this thread

The buffer you're referring to is limited to applying and removing a product and nothing more. The max orbits per minute (OPM) is 3200 depending on the model and up to 6000 for the PC. It will have either one or two speeds vs the PC's variable speed setting. The PC/UDM is a more versatile machine allowing the user to choose from a variety of pads for buffing to paint correction and the results will be consistent every time. The tool is foolproof and simple to use and there are a number of tutorials available online demonstrating its simplicity and effectiveness. The PC/UDM will not burn paint and any damage to paint is usually user incurred or initiated. Granted, it's more expensive than a $30-70 buffer, but the investment in the long run will pay for itself. Visit any of the other detailing forums and you'll probably read the same comments.

Thanks gang. I will take the plunge and let you know how it goes. I saw an add for Griots buffer in Road & Track. Does anyone have any experience with this buffer?

Do you all buy the pads all online? Can you find them at a local retailer like lowes, pep boys or home depot?

I never saw the add for the Griots buffer but if its like anything else from them its grossly over priced ....

Get the PC or the UDM .. Patrick can set you up with a basic "all you need for now" kit then expand fron there if need be ..

Or you can piece meal it from different sources.

I have both the PC & the UDM and for years did it like you ... there IS a huge difference.

RE the pads - I've only been able to find bonnets @ most places, no OTC pads though.

I think the Griot's Random Orbital is $129. The Megs G100A is $225. They also have a new one that will make it's debut in Jan '08. Here are two thread about the Griot's buffer.

I haven't seen any at the local auto parts stores and definetly not available at Lowe's. Maybe you can check with some of the paint & body shops or local detail shops for a local vendor. I think the majority of us purchase pads through online vendors (Exceldetail, Autogeek, etc.) and you can call or email them if you have any questions.

^ Cool. Someone backed into my car 2 weeks ago and the damage is pretty minor- few scratches on the front bumper that I would have to tell you were there for you to believe that the car was hit.

Geico came out and checked out the damage and cut me a check for $1k to get it fixed and cover rental car charges. With that kind of cash I can get a nice buffer and take care of the problem.

My recommendations are as follows:

1.UDM
2.Get the 6.5" pad set (the one that costs like 45ish bucks) has 5-7pads.
3.Get a 4" pad set as well for small areas, the 6.5" pads are rather big in some spots.
4.Optimum Polish or Poli-Seal.
5.Sealant like Four Star Ultimate Paint Protection.
