MF cloths are leaving a trail...

I washed the car the other day with the recommended methods here at the forum, but my Micro Fiber cloths are starting to leave tiny little particles behind when I wipe? Are these now done? These are good MF's too, not the cheap thin ones. I got them from a pro detailer, as he gets them by the case.

I don't use the MF's to dry, I have WW's for initial drying, but during the QD touch-up is when the MF's are leaving little trails of tiny fibers behind? Also to note, how do you wash the all the special cloths? And when you dry them, will Bounce put little fibers in the MF's or WW's? Holla.

Don't use fabric softener when you wash and dry your microfiber.

Sounds like you washed the towels using a fabric softener. Yes???
  1. I never wash MF or WW towels using a fabric softener (liquid or sheets). In general this will render your towels useless and in a state that can leave residue or scratches on the paint. Hence, this could be why you are seeing the residual fibers.
  2. I never dry MF or WW towels in a HOT dryer since they can get pretty coarse if they get too toasty.

Here is what I do for washing:
  1. I only wash MF and WW towels together. Normal cotton towels can leave alot of lint on the MF and WW towels.
  2. I use a liquid detergent since I worry about any undissolved granuals from a dry detergent getting woven into the fibers.
  3. I use the warm to hot setting. This depends on how hot your water is. I can use hot or warm with no issues
  4. I use the longest timed wash setting and the highest spin setting. The towels should only be slightly damp before drying.
  5. I use a medium setting for the dryer. It usually takes me about 20-30 minutes to dry a full load of towels.
  6. Sometimes I get mad static after drying but this goes away when the towels cool down.
  7. I fold every towel into neat stacks depending on what I use the towels for (QD application, Windows, Wheels, Glass, etc.)
  8. When in use, I constantly inpect towels for wear and imbedded particles that can leave a nice scratch.

Beyond Jazz's explanation, I can think of two additional reasons:
  1. The MF's arent living up to their reputation.
  2. They are being over dried, which weakens the strands

Steve ol buddy, if you get static, your overdrying! I really recommend taking them out while still slightly damp.

Got it. I think they were over dried. I will hang dry from now on since they dry so quickly. For the wash, I actually used a cap full of Meguiar's Gold wash & conditioner, since every thing else has contaminants, and it came out nice. Thanks all.

I have over dried some of my microfibers a few years ago. After over drying them, they would leave a trail of tiny lint behind.

Is it bad to wash/dry mitts & MFs in the washing machine that you use for clothes? It seems my car gets super dusty on the outside ever since I started trying to do a correct wash....even the windows. My MFs do feel staticy but I thought fabric softener is supposed to be bad? Anything I can do to relieve the dust (without buying a duster...the problem seems to be static charge buildup).

Wash with Blue Dawn by themselves and hang to dry .. no dryer.

I corrected this issue by purchasing an anti-static quick detailer. Finish Kare, Chemical Guys, and Adams make some. I love the stuff and I don't stress like I used to.

OK, that works fine for me...I had only washed them in the washer/dryer because it was available at the time...but now I just use Dawn & hang-dry. Probably a dumb question but you only apply quick detailer after you wash the car, correct?
