Acura officially enters the spying on you game

Why is it that inventions nowadays involve intruding on people’s privacy?

AcuraLink Driver Feedback

No Acura, not for me, thank you.

Can we trust that this app will not record the data and send it to acura regardless of setting?

I don’t.

They should focus on fixing issues with the car, even little ones. (Hint: Brake hum....)

Spying is the case today...

Guys...
since you have phone/tablet this is not the case...
this is the game btw security/privacy and usability.
from one hand we want to remotely start stop the car, from the other hand we are thinking about privacy.
Today time is tricky...

The ability to remotely start my parked car has nothing to do with tracking how I drive it.

This isn't really anything new. Insurance companies have been doing this for years (on a voluntary basis) for drivers who hope to get a discount for their good driving behavior.

This is new because Acura is getting in on the action. My guess is that the development of the app and the backend are outsourced. We have no idea where our data is going or how it is being used.

I think we all could have foreseen this when installing an app about our cars... I assumed this was the case when I installed the app.

You'd have to opt in. I doubt they could collect or use your data othewise.

On the other hand, my Jeep has a Uconnect App that even shows the location of the vehicle at all times. Also, normal stuff like odometer, tire pressures, oil life remaining, fuel level, etc.... Your Acura has the same information. Do you think that data isn't already being uploaded from your car?

Different level of detail. Apps are notorious for sending information that isn’t pertinent to them even when the user doesn’t opt in. The penalty for getting caught is usually a slap on the wrist if that.

Right! Additionally, almost anyone with a Smart Phone (perhaps only Androids???) is giving away their location, road speed etc. constantly. There are millions of cameras snapping pictures of virtually everyone all the time. Facial recognition software continues to improve. Am I worried about this Acura app? NO. Have I even started using AcuraLink after 1.5 year of ownership? No I don't find the need, regardless of the potential "risks", I don't see the benefits.

That is my opinion, and I stand behind it.

One is location, which is bad enough but necessary for a lot of things to operate.

This is far more than mere location. It is speed, acceleration, deceleration, grip Gs in turns, and God knows what else.

All of which can be used against you, and don’t believe it can’t. And if it can, somehow, someplace, it will.

Nope, but I practice good hygiene. I have < 10 non-Apple apps on my phone. I recently removed LinkedIn when I found they were recording my clipboard. So I'm not about to add more apps.

Ok. So yo fallow that up, I do carry a smartphone on me and I do leave location services on for weather and maps.

It's not that, I just don't want my driving style to be recorded.

Won't be long and your car will drive itself to the police department when you break the speed limit and punch you in the face for too much g force.
Since covid, I put my phone in airplane mode when I leave the house.

I've always been in the habit of turning off services like GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobil data, etc., unless I specifically need them. Mainly to save battery power. While these services are no longer the battery hogs they used to be, I'm still in the habit of leaving them all off except for the 4G cell service. And, if I'm in an area with poor service, I'll put the phone in airplane mode because constantly pinging for a cell that isn't there still wastes power.

So, most of the time, I only have the cell service running. I know they can get approximate location from that but so what.

This is a dupe thread. Can moderators combine?

Actually, I should have said covid-19 84. Orwell was off a few years.
Since science says masks can't block the virus, we should all just seal plastic bags over our heads. This flu is so bad it's killing businesses.
