Yet another network help thread...

I've searched the internet with no success, therefore I turn to AZ for support.

My internet randomly disconnects itself roughly five times a day.

My laptop (and all other devices for that matter) stay connected to the Wireless network, they just all lose internet connection.

After the connection is dropped, I go to check the modem/router and everything looks okay.

The only way to reconnected to the internet is to power cycle both the Modem and the Router.

I have a Motorola SB5120 SURFboard Modem and a Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N gigabit router.

Any ideas?

Does this happen if you connect directly to the modem with an ethernet cable, or only on wireless?

Slowly start taking things out of the equation until you find the problem:

1. Plug directly into your router.
2. Plug directly into your modem.
3. Plug directly into an electrical outlet while standing in a tub of water.

My brain must be burnt out from studying. That makes too much sense, not sure why I didn't think of that. Thank you.

Always try to get the basics first. Most likely its interferance on your wireless. I had a similar thing caused by my Wii. The computer would show that I was connected to the router but I was getting so much interferance I couldn't access the internet. I changed my wireless channel from 6 to 11 and all is good now.

Sorry to bump my own dead thread. Figured I may as well confirm my results in case someone has a similar problem and actually searches.

Thank you spdy0001, it was indeed interference. I changed the frequency and it works fine now.

+1 imaginary rep point.

Glad to hear you solve the issue. I had a similar issue with my Linksys router, I ended up updating the firmware and it solved my issue.

1. go to your start menu
2. go to run
3. type in "command"

Black box will show up. Dont mess this step up. Do one right after the other.

Type in
ipconfig /refresh
ipconfig /renew

See if that works and reset your modem while your at it just for shits and giggles.

Isn't it ipconfig /release instead of refresh?

I'm not sure exactly what all this does. I'm assuming it forces your computer to "release" the ip address from the computer, then "renew" or get issued a new one?

If so, wouldn't power cycling my router effectively do the same thing since I don't have static ip's?

I had problems before where I would restart my modem and router but the problem would persist so I decided to do both options.

For Example I play Counter Strike once in a while and I was getting flush packets and reseting the router didn't work but the other option did.

release renew would be the same as selecting the repair option for your wireless connection, or just restarting your whole computer.
powercycling always works best
