Wireless Network - Range Extender

I'm tired of low signal dead spots in my house.

Looking to get a wireless network range extender.

I've read on various sites, and it seems to be a love it or hate it with various brands and models.

Anyone got any recommendations of make and models...one's that you have that work well.

Thanks.

I just use 2 routers that are bridged.. One in my office and one downstairs.. that way I can have my 360/HTPC/etc. hooked up through the internet.. I have 2 linksys routers doing this.

I had a hawking booster and it worked great. It did have a low hum to it but it boosted my signal from 1/5 to 4/5 bars. Ended up selling it because I moved and didn't need it anymore.

I had a netgear one. Worked great until it overheated and melted the internals. I am currently looking for something a bit more reliable.

I have a Hawking Tech unit.

I plugged it in, configured it, and it's been just working ever since. I don't notice any delays in laptops that use it.

I have 2 routers but only use one. I'd like to try this. Do I have to install Tomato or something into the bridged one? I have a D-Link N through Comcast that I'm using now and a Linksys G which is not being used that I'd put in the bedroom.

Another question, in the bedroom I have a wireless BD Player. Should I plug it into the bridged G router or receive it wirelessly through the N?

Surprising to hear so many of you have had good experiences with Linksys products. I've had nothing but bad experiences with every Linksys product I purchased with the exception of one. All the problem units I had included 3 routers, an access point, a range extender, and a wireless PCI card. The only unit I had a good experience with was a wireless bridge that I used with my first gen XBOX.

If you need to bridge off of your router and maximize output...this is the way to go.

ASUS baby ...one of the best networking pieces I've ever bought. I have fast downloading speeds all over the house.

or if you just need one...(I have this one).

*granted my townhome is 2 stories with 1720 sqare ft not including the garage. I can walk out to the street and still have pretty stellar signal. Going on the porch is a breeze. I wish I had 3 more for the other 360 and 2 BD players

Update: I purchased the Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender.

It works perfectly. I went from 1 bar signal to 5 bars at the far upper corner of the 2nd floor of my house. Simple easy setup. all around!

Technically, Yes.....but in my situation I want it the other way around for hardware location reasons.

My former setup had the router and the 2nd floor, and it really did not make that much of a difference.....perhaps 10-15% better than when it's located on the 1st floor.

Each house/building is going to yield different results.

I have my router and switches placed next to my cable modem and structured wiring cabinet, which is located where my cable service enters the house (in the basement at one end of the house).

I have the same setup, two bridged Linksys routers FTMFW and it's working like a charm.

I'm searching for a solid N replacement for mine but it's not a top priority. This router can cover all of my house and even the back patio

I've never ever had an issue with my linksys products. Not sure why but they seem to work excellent for me. D-Link on the other hand
