Windows XP Corporate Edition users beware...
A friend of mine just told me that one of his co-workers updated his Windows XP (Corporate Edition) recently. Here's the message he got after he restarted his computer
Windows has been installed on your machine with an invalid product key. The type of key found on your system is typically licensed by organizations who want to use multiple copies of windows. If you do not have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft, then you may be a victim of software piracy.
Not sure if this is a true story. I ran Windows Update on a legit copy at work and it wants me to download a new version of Windows Update.
Anyone else heard or experience this? Are other Windows versions affected?
UPDATE: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Windows Update was changed a short while ago to check for valid product ID's. M$ is continually adding keys to the no-no list that are known to be floating around on the Internet. At least that's my understanding.

AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours."
Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
It turns off the trigger for the key check.

Yeah, I saw this JS exploit on Neowin and a few other sites. Amazing how much effort Microsoft goes through, only for it to be ruined by a simple line of javascript.
You're obviously looking in the wrong places to purchase the OS. I just checked Newegg right now and they have XP Pro w/ SP2 OEM for $147. Under the Microsoft "System Builder License," it's perfectly legal to buy the OEM version without a computer. It just has to be purchased with a piece of hardware.
From the System Builder license agreement...

So if you buy a new HD, vdieo card, memory, whatever, you're eligible to get the OS legally AND cheaply.

4. SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION.
4.1 If the individual software license is a desktop operating system (including Windows XP Media Center Edition),we grant you a nonexclusive right to distribute individual software licenses; provided that each one is distributed with either (a) a fully assembled computer system or (b) a nonperipheral computer hardware
component. A “fully assembled computer system” means a computer system consisting of at least a central processing unit, a motherboard, a hard drive, a power supply, and a case. A “nonperipheral computer hardware component” means a component that will be an integral part of the fully assembled computer system on which the individual software license will be installed.

This is caused by dumbasses giving volume lics to their friends. Their friends then put the key on the internet.
