XP is very nice. I like it. People can ***** about it and the extra cost and hassle, but the latest is the greatest with so many new features. Whoever is running Windows 98 or ME now should really make the upgrade to XP quickly.

1 word for you - Authentication. Check with the more savy computer people out here to find out more details.

Is it true that a XP cd can only be used once. Meaning you can't make copies and load the operating system on multiple computers?

Pretty much. There are ways around it with cracks, reg hacks & $hit, but I don't trust them. They seem to be working for me now since my version is on multiple computers (temporarily) and they are all on the internet on the same time.

XP sucks anyway, I loaded it on 2 computers here at my house and it's a joke. It's like Windows PlaySkool. It looks so childish with the colors and icons. I'll take Windows2000 over any OS out there now.

Take it or leave it? I'll leave it!

Thumbs down

MS changed a lot of things on the UI to make it looks like new. It is more like a minor release after W2K.

Sales of the Office suite has been slowing down. What do you think MS needs right now? $$$ of course. And what's the easiest way to get that? Make a "new" OS. Why? People like you and I who already have computers may not upgrade. The big piece comes from PC manufacturers who will ship new computers with XP.

The performance of XP just sucks. Magazines (such as MSDN) with ties to MS will of course say that XP is the solution. However most technical articles I've read so far recommend people NOT TO MIGRATE TO XP. Here are a couple of them:

Waiting for Windows XP

How do you like this performance?

XP: There's no place for home

For now, I'll stay with W2K.

I heard Win XP is no good too. I am still running on 98 se, and want to upgrade to win 2000. what you guys think? cuz one of my friend told me win 2000 is NT, NT is obviously for networking so which might not be as compatible as the win 98. Give me your opinion!
Thanks all.
PS. my uncle is running the XP, he told me XP is a joke. Half of his programs don't work properly with the new XP OS. This is my point, there are still a lot of good softwares that aren't designed for XP. Of course all the new coming softwares will be more compatible with the XP.... anyways XP is just not for me now.

XP works great. I have been using it since it came out. All my apps are running fine on it, even games. If you are on Win98 or ME, it's a great upgrade. If you are on Win2000, you don't really need it unless you want to have more support for games and stuff.

I'm a little surprised to see all the haters in this thread. Every benchmark I've read has put XP at about the same speed as 2000, and quite a bit faster than 98/ME. And yes, a lot of analysts have recommended that people not upgrade right now, but most of them follow that by saying to wait a few months for better driver support.

If you want compatibility, particularly with games, forget about Win 2000. It's a great OS, but compatibility is not its strong suit. Windows XP makes a lot more sense as an upgrade from 98 for most people. Remember, there is no more NT codebase and Win 9.x codebase - XP is the merger of the two, so everything from here on out will be based on XP.

Most home users do not need Win2k, and it probably would not be a good idea to upgrade to it for compatibility reasons. There is a lot of software - most games, and a lot of other stuff that may have special drivers - that just won't run on Win2k.

I wouldn't say XP Home is trash. I have the Pro, but I have been wondering if I should have bought Home and saved $100. The only things I know of that Pro has over Home are: file encryption and compression, multi-processor support, remote desktop access. I don't use any of those features.

I rarely play games -- if I do they aren't intensive ones --
stuff like Yahtzee -- Monopoly - Solitaire

I use it for The net/email/aol/flash/macromedia/etc....
nothing particularly intensive -- and MP3 playback/burning CDs

ive been using 98 ever since it came out. i like xp much better. if you format your system often, xp makes it real easy. all i have to do is put the cd in, restart the pc, hit the enter key a few times and come back 25min later to see it up and running again. it installs most of my drivers

hey ive got the oem version of xp. it doesnt ask me for the cd key # when i do a clean install. but i bet it wouldnt install on another computer

You could do either XP or Win2K. If you are buying the software anyway, I would just go with XP. It doesn't sound like you are doing anything out of the ordinary, so you should be OK. Even if there are problems with drivers, it will all get straightened out in a couple of months.

OF course, the smart thing to do would be to download the migration tool from Microsoft. It will search your machine and identify any hardware or software that would cause problems with XP. If it doesn't find any major problems, then go with XP, otherwise go with Win2k.

I upgraded from 98 SE to XP and it's a hell of a lot better, in terms of stability and speed. And i'm not that big of a loser to be able to distinguish the difference of a couple of seconds! Did anyone actually see the picture of a guy on that page that was bashing XP?? Real winner there...

XP is probably OK, but does not support existing applications all that well. Even applications supposedly ready for XP cause problems.

I installed Mcafee Virus Scan 6.01.1008 and FVCK ME, it has a bug which DELETES all Outlook Express emails! Worse damage than any virus I've ever happened upon. There is a patch to correct the problem, but no recovering the lost emails.

Mcafee ought to be ashamed of itself publishing this POS software.

Man I'll talk to my friend who works for Hp customer service. He has the corporate copy or something like that. He gave me a copy, no registration or anything need. One thing is I can't burn a copy. My burner keeps coasting it...

Just installed Windows XP Pro and it looks and works great. Upgraded from Windows ME.

The only problem is that it bumped my Printer & CD Burner Software due to compatibility issues, so I had to re-install them again.

It would be wise to have your original programs on hand for reinstallation.

It does seems easy to install and it is, but there are always going to be compatibility issues with software and hardware which should be minor.

Windows ME users should definitely upgrade, ME was just OK, XP is much better.

Windows 2000 users, it really depends. Windows 2000 is a very good OS.
