Video: Microsoft WorldWide Telescope, really cool!
This a really cool program coming out soon from MS research. It's an easy way to tour the Universe.

Big Block go VROOOM!
It's noble of Microsoft to allow the research division the resources to develop this and give it away for free. It can only be a good thing as far as schools and public-at-large education is concerned.
As far as what the actual product appears to be though, it's nothing revolutionary. They're just putting a modern pretty face on what dedicated planetarium programs have been doing for many years already. They guy that said "It's going to change the way we do astronomy" is either a total Microsoft PR shill or should simply be slapped.

IDK what the fuck is going on but I can't get this install to work. It's like it installed everything else but the program. I went through some annoying install process that took forever and then when it's all said and done I ain't got shit to show for it, thanks Micro$oft! You fucking suck!

the install worked fine for me. to get the live view, it seems you have to have an actual telescope.

mine is
1. open wwtsetup.exe
2. it extract and opens Windows SDK install program.
3. it tells my stuff is too new and I need to "upgrade" to an older version
4. then it tells me I need to download and install about 1gb worth of stuff including frameworks, debugging tools, documentations, sample code, etc! All the while saying absolutely nothing about some telescope thing. I install all this worthless shit and then afterwards I open the install log file and I see nothing about telescopes, I search for it in the start menu and I can't find shit!
What the F!
I'll gonna uninstall re download and try again and my Zune better still work after installing an older version of the 2.0 framework.

I just ran WWTSetup and was done. No SDK installs for me. You don't want the SDK anyway, just the redistributable for whatever .NET version you need. Reflector shows that WWTExplorer.exe uses .NET 2.0.0.0, so I don't know why you don't have a matching version.
I don't have VS2008 here at work, but I have .NET 2.0 SP1, .NET 3.0 SP1, and .NET 3.5.

you know what I'm gonna try this on Vista x64 and if it won't work their I'll try XP. Cause I don't see how this is going to work for me on Vista x86. No one else got a screen that looks like this during install? Cause this is what I get everytime I open setupwwt.exe

I finally got it to install! I stumbled across why it wasn't working, I've never seen this before, it's a weird bug. OK I've got 4 hard drives in my PC and one is set to be my personal files drive seperate from my OS drives cause if anything goes wrong with them and I need to reinstall, I won't lose all my pr0n and other downloads. Anyways so I downloaded the file to the HDD like I do with all my other files, it wasn't until I discovered in XP (I was having theis problem in all my OS) that if I download the file to the desktop like XP does by default that the program ran fine but if I tried to run it from my seperate drive I go the sdk install no matter what OS I ran. So needless to say I got it running, FINALLY!

Alright so I officially love this program! Here's a cool feature to try, it's the "copy current view to clipboard" which means you can make awesome space desktop backgrounds with this thing! Should we start a contest who can make the coolest background with this program? Let's see what you got! First though here's a good how-to on making desktop backgrounds with this program
A couple of hours ago Microsoft Research released the first public beta of Worldwide Telescope since it’s debut last month. The software is a seamless combination of various state-of-the-art Microsoft technologies including Live Lab’s Photosynth and Seadragon with of course the magical high-resolution pictures from numerous imaging satellites including the Hubble. Those who’ve played with it already will probably agree with how breathtaking the experience is.

Sooner or later you’ll probably want to share some of the galaxies you’ve visited. Whilst you could design and distribute your own “Guided Tour”, pictures are probably still the safest bet. Here’s a couple steps to make sure you get the most out of your pictures.

Step 1: First and most obviously is to find something interesting in the universe. A good place to start are the galleries on the top. Once you’ve found something, play around with the zoom and pan to get it perfect.

Step 2: In the “Settings” tab, move the “Image Quality” slider to “Sharper” and tick “Auto Hide Tabs” and “Auto Hide Context”. This will maximize your view to get a much wider picture.

Step 3: In the “View” tab, untick “Figures”, “Boundaries”, “Ecliptic”, “Reticle/Crosshairs” to remove any artificial lines or overlays in your image.

Step 4: Maximize your window (and wait for any image tiles to update), and then click the sub-menu in “View” and click “Copy Current View to Clipboard”. Wait a few seconds, then paste it in Paint or your favorite image editor.

Voila. Fit for a wallpaper or just send it to your family and friends to show off your new astronomy skills

And for you fools who think Google sky is the same thing, you need to actually try it before saying that cause you'll quickly learn WWT is WAAAAYY better. Google sky is like the kid version of this, the UI is lame, there's no guided tours and the image quality is sub par. For example above is the image quality of WorldWide Telescope and this is the same thing but from Google Sky

No where near the quality of WWT!

Still don't see what the big deal is about this. There's nothing new here. All WWT is doing is taking images and data that have been out there for anyone that's interested and pulling them together under a pretty interface. It's a fun toy. That's all.

Seadragon is the great zoom technology used in WWT

My other thread reminded me that MS has released a web version of WWT using silverlight. It's not as fast as the app, well not for me but if you got blazing internet speeds it might be much faster. It is a beta too so I'd expect the final product to be better. Anyways this gives those who don't have Windows to try out this awesome program.
