I am not surprised. UK is just following the traditional close ties with US.
Since US military runs a LOT of systems on Windoz.

From my personal experience on US Submarines, we use a bunch of different flavors of UNIX. So we're good there

You're lucky

The tincans and carriers have to deal with Windows 2000.

So when a British soldier sees "bugger off" on the screen, is he/she reading program status or an instruction?

I remember touring Johnson Space Center and I think NASA ran Mission Control for shuttle missions with off-the-shelf PCs running Windows (or at least it did about four years ago). I remember wondering how safe that was. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Aboard submarine HMS Torbay:

"I'll fire in a minute - just rebooting quickly." - Gunner's mate

"That's bloody weird - I clicked "fire" but it seems to have hung." - Missile gunner

"Does ANYBODY know what the bloody hell it means then it says
"Your system is running low on virtual memory?" - CIC crewmember during a battle

"I swear I didn't click fire! It just went and did it !" - Missile gunner on
the joy of using Windoz to control missile release functions

"Did you click fire ONCE or TWICE?" - Captain

"Welll.... it didn't respond when I did so I did it a few times, in case it
missed the first click." - Missile gunner

I'm worried about that Seawolf class though, the so called "paperless" submarine.

It's not all that bad really...I'm on shore duty with a couple of guys off of the Connecticut and that is one nice boat! When it works, it works really well. AS for the issue of getting parts for it...that's a totally different story
