Treo 670 to run Windows Mobile

can any of you mobile insiders confirm?

HTC to manufacture Windows based Treo 670

Shortly after our last newsletter, a report in DigiTimes surfaced confirming the forthcoming Windows Mobile based Treo 670. High Tech Computing, located in Taiwan will be handling the production. No official release date has been given, although it's rumored to be released during the first quarter of 2006. It's been a relatively quiet week for Treo 700 rumors - other than an obvious Photoshop rendition of the Treo 700 that was surprisingly picked up by other Treo sites as news. Discuss next generation Treo smartphones in our newly created section in the forums.

hope this is not true. it's gonna suck for mac users . they're gonna lose a lot of mac customers. doubt M$ will design pocket pc to work "well" with OS X

but treos are made by palm using palm OS. why would they use windows OS? plus, palm is developing a new OS version 6.

verizon on the photo? if anything, shouldn't it be just a "palm" labeled device at this point?

hope it's not true. if it is, looks like i'm gonna be switch to pocket linux

Why would PalmOne build a Treo to run on its competition's operating system?

95% > 3%

Not a difficult business decision to make when designing a product.

Are Palm's OS and Palm's hardware still in two separate companies? I can't remember since they merged/split/merged/bought/sold/etc a hundred times. Anyway, maybe the hardware people don't want to go down with the ship. I know my next PDA probably won't be a Palm even though I've been with them from the beginning. It just has the feel of a dying platform with no one doing anything constructive to compete.

I remember something like this. I recall rumors of Palm getting out of the cell phone OS game about a year ago.

PalmOne is the merged company of Handspring and Palm so it really doesn't make a lot of sense.

www.Treocentral.com seems to think the OS willl be Palm Cobalt 6.1.

not really a difficult decision. yes M$ has a huge share of the market but in the PDA world there's palm OS, pocket PC, symbian OS, linux, and propietary OS

most windows users will likely to get pocket pc, since the price on those things have dropped. now we're left with non-windows OS for pda. palm controls that. and majority are mac users. do you think palm would jeopardize that?

damn this is looking good... however I do hope they don't downgrade the resolution of the screen... that would be a (bad) step backwards...

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000867059961

A few confirmed specs: Windows Mobile 5.0, one megapixel camera, EV-DO, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, still trying to conclusively determine the resolution of the display, but it looks to our eyes like it’s 240 x 240 pixels, not 320 x 320. But we’re not 100% on that, ok?

can anybody think of a use for this?

http://img.engadget.com/common/image...26460025704068

I mean, on the 6670 it's useful because the keyboard slides out horizontally - but on the 700? I don't get it.

Palm and Microsoft Join to Bring the Palm Experience to Windows Mobile; Verizon Wireless First to Market with New Treo Smartphone

SAN FRANCISCO — Sept. 26, 2005 — Mobile-computing pioneer Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) and software pioneer Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: “MSFT”) today announced a strategic alliance to accelerate the Smartphone market segment with a new device for mobile professionals and businesses. Palm has licensed the Microsoft® Windows Mobile® operating system for an expanded line of Treo™ Smartphones, the first of which will be available on Verizon Wireless’ national wireless broadband network. The news was revealed in a press conference with Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm; Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft; and Denny Strigl, chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless.

The collaboration gives customers more choices and marks a dedicated effort to deliver one of the world’s most innovative Smartphone solutions on the software platform favored by many businesses. Treo Smartphones combine the hallmark Palm experience of a full-featured mobile phone with e-mail, messaging, Web access1 and organizational software in an attractive, compact design. The New Treo Smartphone takes advantage of the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform in multiple ways, offering Outlook® Mobile, Office Mobile and Internet Explorer Mobile built into the Smartphone, as well as direct access to Exchange Server 2003 for mobile access to information2. In addition, the new Treo will operate with Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service, the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States. Verizon Wireless expects the new Treo to be available to its customers in early 2006.

“We’ve long believed that the future of personal computing is mobile computing, and our collaboration with Microsoft is a historic step in delivering that vision to a larger market,” said Colligan. “We’re confident customers will see a differentiated Smartphone that delivers our world-class usability on Microsoft’s flexible and robust Windows Mobile operating system. We collaborated with Verizon Wireless first because of its high-speed wireless network and growing footprint of BroadbandAccess cities.”

“This is a landmark alliance that will help businesses remain on the cutting edge of competitiveness,” Gates said. “Demand for accessing information on mobile devices is soaring, and businesses want a low-cost, scalable solution. We’re excited to team with Palm and Verizon Wireless to deliver a winning Windows Mobile solution that connects professionals to their critical information while on the go.”

The Treo Smartphone on Windows Mobile is a CDMA-based phone targeted for the U.S. market and takes advantage of Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess service on its EV-DO network with download speeds averaging 400-700 kilobits per second. Today, about half the U.S. population, in more than 84 major metropolitan areas and in hundreds of airports across the nation, can access download speeds comparable to DSL or cable-modem connections. Verizon Wireless has been expanding its BroadbandAccess service area steadily since its debut in the fall of 2003.

“The new Treo Smartphone will highlight the speed and power of our BroadbandAccess service,” said Strigl. “The Treo will deliver fast downloading of e-mail and attachments as well as quick access to critical-business information, providing businesses with a great return on investment. Our strong relationships with Microsoft and Palm continue to provide real value for our customers.”

The new Treo Smartphone is powered by an Intel processor and joins Palm’s award-winning family of Treo Smartphones, which includes the Treo 600 and 650, both offered today to Verizon Wireless customers.

The Palm Experience on Windows Mobile

During the press conference, the companies demonstrated the Palm experience now brought to life on Windows Mobile. The audience saw a sampling of Palm’s award-winning hardware design integrated thoughtfully with a rich Palm Software suite including the ability to:

• Contact someone quickly from the Today Screen and choose between home, office or mobile numbers, or select e-mail or SMS. With only two letters entered, a customer can find a record from among thousands of contacts;

• Reach people most often called via photo speed dials visible as a band of images on the Today Screen;

• Decline a call with a friendly SMS, signaling “In a meeting” or “Talking with the boss” instead of simply ignoring the call; and

• Rewind, delete or fast-forward through work or cell phone voice mail with familiar and consistent on-screen icons.

Full product details will be disclosed when the product is available for purchase in early calendar 2006. No plans were revealed for additional mobile operators. Palm indicated that a Treo Smartphone using Windows Mobile based on other wireless technologies was not anticipated to be released earlier than the second half of 2006.

No kidding. It doesn't make sense given it's a square screen. You don't gain anything.

more than you can afford, lol. j/k I'm thinking it'll be about $500-600, much like the 650 was when it came out.

all I have to say is, the 650's keyboard has spoiled me. I could never go back to using a conventional numberpad cell-phone... the text capabilities of a full keyboard are too convenient.

its ok - I think you can install graffiti 3rd-party, but no, you don't need it, unless you can't type on the keyboard. yes the keys are small but it's possible to type on em and like anything else, you get better at it with practice.

noramlly yes more than i can afford but thanks to verizons stupidity of advertising i get my v710 money back to put towards it. which i bought the v710 right when it came out so i paid a hefty price. now should i be able to use mp3s as ringtones with this phone cause i can right now with my original frimware v710 and thus why i am skipping the verizon razr.
