I just got thunderbird for the first time after seeing this thread and have it linked with my gmail account. It seems like every message I send from gmail goes to my inbox in tb as well, anybody know how to change that?

what are the differences/advantages of using thunderbird over outlook? After the switch I loved the simplicity of it. Very easy to use interface after you get used to where things are. And the junk filtering seems to be more intuitive as well. Message filters are also A LOT easier to setup compared to Outlook/Outlook Express/Eudora. The address book seems to be a lot simpler than outlook mainly because it's not a full contact management system like outlook is although it can hold a lot of information.
After using it at work for a while, I ditched outlook at home as well. Never looked back. After that I used outlook only to manage tasks and my calendar, but that was a while ago and actually I haven't opened up outlook in god knows how long.
TB > outlook > Eudora
I believe they are working on a calendar system, I don't know if it will be part of a future version of TB or not. If it is,

I wish TB had a simple Task manager. That would be awesome. If it had that and the calendar, it would be a serious contender with outlook.
Oh forgot one thing, I also use outlook as my newsgroup reader.

You may prefer Lightning if...
- you send or receive meeting invitations via email
- you already use Mozilla Thunderbird for email
- you customize your applications with add-ons (such as extensions or themes)
- you prefer your calendar to be separate from your email client
- you don't currently use Mozilla Thunderbird for your email
- you don't like adding add-ons (such as extensions or themes) to your applications

If you want to give it a try. For a month, download your mail to whatever you are currently using and to thunderbird. But only use thunderbird during that month. This way after the month if you dont' like thunderbird, at least you have downloaded your mail to outlook already and you can continue on.
That's what I did and it worked out. In that month, I set up my email accounts, message filters, installed extensions, set up my junk filters etc...
Also, here's my currently installed extensions for thunderbird. Thunderbird is the lonely child in the mozilla group. It doesn't have as many people developign extensions for it like Firefox does. If there is one extension to install it's the Minimize to tray. Outlook does that by default, TB doesn't. So after you install that it makes it much nicer.

Oh forgot to mention one thing.
I love the labeling feature in TB. it has 5 labels by default that coresspond to a number. So I have 1 = important, 2 = shipments, and so on. And then you can view by label so if for example I wanted to see any shipments that are coming my way, i just view by that label and voila.
If anything I use that feature the most.
