Sony Ericsson K790/K800

Does anyone know anything about this phone? It looks pretty sweet.

loooks a little thick, but sports a 3.2mp camera and real flash.

I got the K800 back in November. Had a SE T630 before this. Pretty good phone, good reception, feels solid in the hand. I haven't used the camera much, but most of the pictures I've taken have been decent. If you get it, you'll probably need to upgrade from the 64mb M2 card that comes with it.

I believe SE has just announced the K810, which is basically going to be a cosmetic upgrade

Been thinking about getting one because the photo quality is amazing. Better then any other phone I've seen.

That said, it's a tad expensive and the k810 is on its way (although will be even more expensive and harder to find here).

I'm thinking about getting a k550 instead.

I've been reading how a lot of people had problems with the K800 when it first came out. It would freeze for no reason. But so far, mine hasn't given me any problems.

Personally, I don't like the looks of the K810, especially those round buttons.

The K550 seems like a nice phone. EDGE, so better suited to the U.S. Only a 2MP camera, but then I don't really think that matters since no one should be using a cell phone as a primary camera.

i like the round buttons of the K810. i'm just expecting it to be $500+ unlocked. $400 easily.

i'd rather spend that kind of cash on an iPhone.

the 2MP resolution of the K550 is fine, i don't ever expect to print photos from camera phone pics. 2MP is a more than adequate on screen resolution. that said, i've seen 1 set of pics from the 550 so far and i wasn't impressed with the overall quality. seems to have some white balance issues especially.

nonetheless, it's a decent phone for the price (under $300)

From what I remember, the K800 was going for around 500 US unlocked when it first launched , so the K810 should definitely be around that mark.

I won't need/want a new phone for another year or so, so I'm probably going to stay away from looking at developments in the cell market. Have to keep desire for new phones at a minimum.

i looks like the W900 but in the movie it seems like they use it like a flip phone

its this phone

but after looking at the movie again, i think its the W900 i think just the way the characters closed it, made it look like it was a flip phone when they were just flipping it around

thought it was gonna be some cool new flip phone that they were coming out with, cause all the ones they have now are garbage looking imo

I ordered it from www.hi-mobile.net

It wasn't too bad...$300. The bluetooth headphones were like 80 or so, and I orderered the memory card from newegg for like $27. I should have it by friday, I'm pretty psyched. Apparantly it can be flashed with the software from the w610, which gets you a cooler, flash UI which is more customizable, and the walkman 2.0 player with megabass (read this on howardforums). The only side effect is that the camera doesn't activate automatically when you open the lens cover, which is no biggie

will do. the only shitty thing is that I had to pay like $45 in shipping. and they only gave me one option - UPS second day. ugh.

alright. ordered mine, from same place. same shipping... UPS 2nd Day.

they said it'll be here Friday, although I got no track number today so I'm betting Monday. Plus they're coming from Canada.

there was a place in NYC selling them on e-bay, but dude couldn't speak proper english so i figured the canucks were a safer bet.

okay so i got it today....now i realize why shipping was $45....2 day UPS from hong kong!....The phone is awesome. It's super small, great reception, good screen, cool camera, and nice features. I've just begun to play with it though, so I still have a lot to explore. The keys are a little tricky to press, but they press easily, so it's not too bad. I'm thinking about maybe flashing the w610 firmware so I can get the flash UI and the walkman 2.0 mp3 player, but the current UI is pretty good, so I don't know

half the point of the cybershot cameras is the auto activation with the lens covers, it'd seem silly to flash it with W firmware.

yo soopa, the site is a little wierd. I got the tracking number the same day it got here. But it was still 2 day shipping...

Anyways, I like the lens cover because it protects the camera against scratches. it's nice that it turns on when you open the cover, but i don't really mind setting the camera to one of the quick launch buttons. plus i hear that the walkman 2.0 is better than the player on the phone currently, and you get the megabass settting.

I'm a little afriad to lose some of the applications that come with the phone, which are photo-oriented, but they are just regular applications, so I'm not sure if they would be erased with a system software change.

got the k550 today. so far it seems great. camera isn't as nice as i'd hoped, but better then most.

love the panorama and photo editing functions. you'd be silly to re-flash and use all that.

i've been playing with the SE Theme Creator for Mac, pretty neat. going to try to make a full theme in a couple weeks.

i found it a little difficult to justify spending ~$400 on the k790 while the k810 is just days from being available in a much slimmer package.

I've heard you don't lose that functionality when you re-flash. But anyways, I don't really see a need to re-flash becuase I like the phone as it is right now. There are so many functions that are cool...i upgraded my plan to unlimited data so i can take advantage of the RSS reader, the gmail and google maps apps that I downloaded, etc. I love this phone. It's such a step up from the razr it's not even funny.

The only downsides are

1) having to plug in a wired handsfree to use the radio
2) no voice dial functionality
3)all the imagines in the web browser are super low quality (this is cingular's fault, I think)

i still haven't figured out how to get my internet to work w/ cingular.

it asks me to create a profile and i can't for shit get it to work. what settings did you use?

the biggest downer of this phone to me is the flimsiness of the battery cover. it seems rather cheap.

I went to SE's site, where I specified my model and phone number, and they send you a text message that automatically configures your phone correctly

First i did this to enable picture mesasging (i think)

MMS;
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp...ps1_1&pid=10447

Then this for internet.
WAP;
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp...ps1_1&pid=10447

I also downladed the opera mini browser and it helps the images (and its actaully a little faster). but it would still be nice to have it work properly under the normal browser.

battery cover is a little cheap feeling....once i made sure it was all locked properly it helped a little. did you go for the white or the black? I had to go black, although the white was pretty sweet looking too.

i went black. the white is nice, but a little too trendy and would probably look like shit in a few months.

thanks for the liks, i'll give them a try.

hahha the battery cover and having to use the headset for the radio was my complaint w/ the K750

but the radio thing is understandable because it uses the cables as the antenna

yeah. i just wish i could use my bluetooth headphones with the radio. it has this thing where if you are listening to the radio and are curious as to what the song is, it records a few secs of the song, checks with a server, and tells you the name. pretty cool.

also i need to get teh good headphones that come with the walkman series

every cell phone on the market with a built in FM tuner requires corded headphones be plugged into the phone to act as an antenna. this certainly isn't just an SE thing.
