easy to setup, just read the manual. BUT, make sure you secure the wireless signal by renaming the default SSID from "Linksys" to something like "NOLACLS," disabling the SSID broadcast, disabling DHCP, enabling MAC filtering, and enabling WEP.

Yeah I have the router already (havent opened it up yet) and the wife is picking up the laptop as we speak. I guess once I read the manual I will know what your talking about with the SSID and all. Why do I want to change that?

make sure you check the website for filmware updates... then after you are all set-up, make a back-up copy.

Thats what I planed on doing...the wife also makes backups of important stuff from time to time just in case. She had a hard drive crash and she lost everything...not good. I have a desktop PC now...we just wanted this...but we will still have the PC up and running...and probably colecting dust

SSID:
the router/AP will broadcast an identifier so that wireless NICs will know which wireless network to connect to. if you broadcast it, then people/neighbors/war drivers will be aware of your wireless network. this is a potential security risk should someone want to sneak into your network and steal bandwidth and/or sensitive info. so, disabling this broadcast (AND changing the SSID from the default "Linksys") would be the first preventive measure you can take.

DHCP:
if they don't know your SSID, they most likely won't be able to connect to it anyways. but, if they do, your router will give them an IP address. if you disable this, and change your default network address from 192.168.0.XXX to something else like 192.168.99.XXX, then it would make it harder for someone to get on your network

MAC Filtering:
Each network card, including the wireless adapter for your laptop has a unique MAC or Hardware address. This is different from your IP address as the MAC is hardcoded by the NICs manufacturer. By enabling filtering, your router is allowing only MAC addresses that you deem safe or allowed to use your wireless network. I.e., if I was able to bypass your SSID and DHCP preventitive measures, I still wouldn't be able to get onto your wireless network since your router is not allowing the NIC in my machine to do so.

WEP:
Encryption...a rather weak one, but it should keep the casual snoop away. Your wireless AP and wireless NIC will be transmitting signals during communication, WEP will provide encyrption of this signal.

So can you use any computer that is on your home network to change these settings?

I just got that same router two days ago and set it up yesterday...I ran a hardwire from my computer to the wireless router port #1 to make all the changes I needed, and that worked well for me, but don't know that it's necessary.

I would set up the WEP so that someone would have to know the code to use your wireless network. Right now, anyone of your close neighbors or just someone driving by can get into your wireless network with no problems. WEP isn't a surefire way to keep EVERYONE out, but no one will bother trying to hack in unless they have a really good reason to, and even then getting past the WEP code is pretty hard to do
I live in an apartment building in the middle of the city and my computer picks up 7 other wireless signals, I could get into just about everyone of them with no problem, so I set up the WEP on mine for a little peice of mind.

Yeah I saw all that when setting it up but really didnt know what I was doing and it was late I will do that today. How do I get back to that setting for the router...or is that done on the laptop setting now...or both.

I am the only wireless that I pick up.

I don't know how you set it up, but I ran a hardwire to the back of the wireless router to port one, then I went to that web address that was stated in the directions and was able to make all my changes there. I can't remember what tab it was under exactally, but just look around for the WEP security. I am computer retarded and I was able to do it pretty easily. I have the Linksys 802.11 G with speedbooster (looks like what you have posted above) so the set up should be very similar

Hope this is of some help.

Yeah mine is like that to...from the modem to the router to the PC that I did the setup on. I didnt not go to that web address tho...maybe ill look at that some more tonight. If I change the setting for the router I have to change the setting for the laptop as well? Or is there even 2 settings....I am new to this as well lol. But I did get the foker to work

Actually, you don't even have to run a hardwire back to your router since you are already set with wireless.
1) Enter the web address stated in the directions (mines says to go to http://192.186.3.3, yours will probably be different)
2) Enter your name and your password (you may not have this set up yet)
3) Go to the Wireless Tab
4) Go to the Security tab
5) Click generate
6) You will be given a set of numbers/letters, and that is your WEP code that you need to enter to access your wireless network. Once it is entered, you are locked in to that code and don't have to enter it again.
7) Do more surfing from your couch, bed, wherever and enjoy!

I still have the inter net on my PC that is not wireless so it needs to be linked to my modem still. The laptop is not wired to anything.

I will fool with it some more..and believe me I will be doing more time wasting at home.

You can only use the computers in the network to change the settings if they are installed with the the software used to configure the network settings in the base station (after initially setting up the network in the 1st computer, you are asked to make a copy of the settings, which you can use in the other computers).

I have found out that the best way to stop the neighbors' computers from free-riding on your network is by means of MAC filtering. Just type in the MAC addresses of all your computers in the MAC filtering Options of your network management software.

Now you can hook up your X-Box Live via wireless.

And you can connect your TIVO via wireless too.

And you guys probably know other stuff too. Probably in a few years all your kitchen appliances too.

Congrats on getting it set up so quickly. Some guys here with good advice!

ok guys, heres another question..not trying to jack as its along the same lines.

I have a wireless access point that i am trying to hook up in my apartment at school. TThe building is hard wired so all i have is the standard ethernet jack port in the wall.

My question is...is there any way to use hook up the ethernet cord to the wireless access point and then get my laptop to detect it? I've tried tons of different setups to no avail.

the only difference from this and at my computer at home is the fact that there is a router that i hook the ethernet cord to and then to my wireless access point...i'm so confused

I don't think you can go from a router to a wireless access point. You probably need to get one box with is a combo router/wireless access point.

Heh didnt even think of that stuff...I have PS2 not xbox but it does have that thing to I think. My tivo tho is through drtv and I think they dont allow there units to be hooked like that. I will look into it more tho.

So what else can I do wireless....I know I can do a printer set up right?
