Smitty needs a Laptop

I am lost.

Please help.

I want to spend between 500-850 shipped...but I can be talked into more.

I would like to have.

a smaller computer, not going to be a desktop replacement, light weight would be nice, pentium processor (Pentium M), and I don't need a large HD.

any help would be appreciated.

I sort of like Toshiba or Dell over the rest.

If you go Dell, check out Jetta notebooks. They are Dell notebooks just relabeled and sold by Dell. Why they do it, but they are cheaper than a regular Dell.

Toshibas are also very good laptops. Good luck in your search.

The current Sony with the 13.3" widescreen is a neat unit. Light and smaller than you think (go look at Best Buy, etc) but yet still very powerfull. This may be what I pick up sometime.

not too sure but I think you're talking about the S series. I love Sony computers, just picked up a TR earlier in the year, I think the S replaced it though. I've had several sony computers and they haven't really given me problems You should check them out.

hey smitty...

my dad just bought a Toshiba M35X-S149 right before christmas from CompUSA. I think it was $600 + Free printer. It's a bit slower than most computers because it is a Celeron M Processor, but it works for him because all he is doing is word processing and surfing the internet once in a while.

it's a tad large with a 15.1inch screen...but it works great w/ DVDs because it's flat and wide.

Smitty, I have a Dell Inspiron 500M (they don't make it anymore, but they have the 600M which is identical, with a better graphics processor). Its small, lightweight, and I've lugged it to school everyday and back for the last year and a half, and I've had no problems. I think they are pretty cheap now, around the thousand dollar mark. Its versitile, small, and its good (at least for what I use it for, aka porn and word processing ). Look into it.

edit: just checked dells website, its going for $1005, don't know about shipping

Toshiba Satellite w/ 1.5 GHz Intel® Celeron® M/256MB & 60 GB/15.4" & 6.6 lbs ($899) - cheap, but not Pentium M and not that light

Averatec AV3220H1-01 Amd Athlon XP-M 2000+/256MB & 40 GB/12.1" & 4.2 lbs ($830 - $100 rebate) - cheap, but not Pentium M & a new brand

Dell Inspiron 600m w/ 1.6 GHz Pentium® M/256 MB & 30 GB/14.1" & 4.98 lbs (starting $1124) - almost everything you want, except for the price

Check the Dell site for the ones that have been returned. Decent prices and full warranty as I recall.

I'd look into techbargains.com for any deals on Dell...seem to be the best value.

I'm not a fan of DELLS or Celeron processors, but this is as cheep as you can get. Check out all their deals at CompUSA.

If you can swing a bit more, try this one. I have a Toshiba and it's 3 years old and still works great.

I bought the Toshiba Notebook PC (A75-S209) today...

512MB ram
Dvd-Rom/CD-RW drive
15.4 widescreen display <--- totally cool... love it..
Intergrated wireless 802.11 (connect right to my wireless router) <---badass

I decided I will hold on to this one for a 2-3 years... and I got 12 months Interest free (like that matters)...but it is cool..
1499.99 laptop
150 instant rebate
1349.00
-350.00 rebates
999.99
94.50 tax
Grand total $1094.49

and I just typed all this stuff to you guys/gal on it...

thanks everyone (except gordon_gekko )..I what his beef is with me.

Good choice Smitty, just be sure to send those rebates.

I got a 3 1/2 year old thosiba laptop and it is still working flawlessly (bought just one new battery).
