Sounds like a load of hooey to sell more dvd players before the new formats (whichever they may decide) appear.

But i will have to do more research on this.

Does an upconvert 1080p player exist within <$500?

No it's not real high def but its upconverted to 720p/1080i. does exist and is real. Uses the new Faroudja chip to deinterlace and scale. But only via DVI. Another competing player is the Bravo D1 (D2 coming). Both been out for couple months. Not hooey. If you've got a digitial tv you should get a better picture over a scaled picture since signal stays digital (all the way for dlps and lcds and most of the way for crts) and scaling/deinterlacing from these units should be better than the built in scalers/deinterlacers in TV's. If you've got a big screen or projector with dvi this is the current way to go. Word is more dvd players that scale via dvi are coming soon.

If you don't have dvi, you could look into the Samsung HD1000. If bought from Harvey's they'll install a patch that allows for scaled 720p or 1080i dvd output via component for $1500. Too bad the wife won't let me get one since I can't get rid of my scaler.

And I haven't seen a 1080p player yet at any price. Outside of an HTPC you'd have to look at scalers running $3500 or much much more. Anyways, besides 9" CRT's I don't think there are any displays capable of true 1080p.

Not commercially no. I have 2 24" Sonys at work that are professional monitors that disply true 1080p at 24fps.

Its still sounds hooey, essentailly like line doubling, or streching pixels. Seems like getting a progressive tv and player would make more sense, especially since blue laser or hd dvd will be out soon enough.

Granted i still need to research these players, but it sounds a waste of money with the speed technology is moving.

Agreed for most sets progressive scan is sufficient. but with larger displays or front projectors (those without internal line doublers or scalers) 480p is not enough. So line tripling or scaling to 720p or scaling to 1080i would help these displays rid of scan lines. Also the only other benefit would be a slightly better picture since the signal would stay completely digital and avoid excessive d to a conversions or sub par internal scalers in most tv sets. If you've got a small size set no need for these players. Larger sets may see benefits. And from the testimony I've heard, most digital sets, like lcd or dlp, would benefit from a slightly sharper picture due to less d to a conversions.

It's definitely not hd but its a tiny tiny step closer.

And yup, I meant commercially.

upconverted video... yay

My xbox plays DVD's at 1080i... Not very exciting...

Running my TV at the native 480p progressive mode looks better...

It'll be cool when they do have a HD DVD one day...

The big deal with that player is it's fully digital to the TV... no component cables...

Do you have a modded xbox? I have never seen an xbox upconvert dvd video to 1080i...

SiGGy, your TV is upconverting anyway. It's prob that the XBOX has a shitty ass deinterlacer.

The biggest advantage of this DVD player is the DVI output. That just axes any chances of video interferance. This unit would be hand for long cable runs to projectors, etc. The Faroudja chip should provide a pretty good quality signal.
