What is your plan for ICND2?

 

Thought about going that route. But I hate dealing with people now. So forget it.

 

It's a night class 3 days out of the week and they have labs that we can practice on so that's been my life the past month. We started ICND1 in September and I'll take ICND2 the first week of November. Crazy amount of information but if I can pass ICND2 by Nov 1 then I'll also get my IINS by December.

Just got the Cox Contour installed and it comes with a rental UbeeDVW326B gateway device that handles the duties of modem, router, wifi and eMTA/Voice for phone.

It sucks. They all suck. They also don't seem to allow Bridge-Mode only.

I already have a router that is completely configured and set up with all the port forwarding and features I need, plus my wifi network, guest network, etc.

Long story short, I am looking to buy my own cable modem (ONLY) that can handle the voice for the phone as well. Cox suggested a Cisco DPQ3212 or Motorola SBV5220/5222.

These things are not even for sale anymore, would have to basically buy a used one...

Moto has the SBV6220, but naturally it's not on the Cox approved list. Anyone currently using a non-approved cable modem for service? Thoughts?

While it will be interesting to see how this pans out with the other providers like Dropbox and Box, I have to tell you that article made my head explode. I cannot believe anyone would actual the things that author typed...

No, this is EXACTLY why these pther services do so well, because they listened to their customers and made the features they wanted.

Bwahahaha. Yeah, no one thinks MS has some pretty shitty stuff that they have released over the years... Vista, W8 interface, Office Ribbon, etc...

 

First of all, the author is assuming that everyone will rush to sign up for Office 365 to get free storage. I do think that dropbox had a neat idea when they came out but they better have an exit plan before they get wiped out. Hopefully someone buys the company.

 

There are a LOT of paid subscribers for dropbox. All they have to do is up the storage limits and this "issue" goes away. It's not like unlimited OneDrive is free, it costs $70 a year. You just happen to get Office along with that. Dropbox 1TB service costs $99/year.

One advantage of Dropbox (currently) is that you can selectively sync folders so that all your content is not synching to every device. Have a MacAir with a 128GB drive? You don't have to sync your movies folders to THAT specific device. Just let your HTPC or desktop sync to that folder.

 

^Onedrive does selective sync too. I don't sync my massive camera roll backup to my MBP.

 

Ah, OK. that must be fairly new. That has been a complaint for a while now.

 

Dumb question, but did you call Cox tech support and ask if they can put the gateway in bridge mode? Comcast's gateways do not have a bridge mode option in the user accessible interface, but you can call and request to have your gateway put in bridge mode.

You likely already did this, but I didn't see any mention of it.

 

Thanks for the thought Thunder. I researched the device online and found that it did not have a bridge mode. It also was a refurb where Cox had not reset the login credentials, so I swapped it out for a modem only box (Cisco DPQ3212) which is working well as a modem (only). My netgear is still routing and providing wifi, although I moved all connections off the netgear ports to an un-managed switch that is connected to the netgear. Seemed to get better throughput that way for some reason.

 

Ah. Well then, you've seemed to solve the problem!

Comcast seems to always change things in my area, so I pay the $8/mo equipment lease fee and use their provided gateway. It came in handy when they upgraded my area from DOCSIS 2.0 to DOCSIS 3.0 and when they bumped speeds up to 105Mbps. Both changes I simply requested updated equipment. I suppose the $8/mo lease fee just means I pre-paid for them, haha.

 

They added selective sync almost 2 years ago. OneDrive also can list all your files in Explorer but they're hardly taking up any disk space. It's like they're shortcuts to the online version so you can browse them in File explorer but they won't take up any space until you click to open one and then it will get silently downloaded to your PC and open.

So you can browse your unlimited Onedrive storage through File explorer and then when you open something it will download it, saving tons of disk space.

Compare actual size with size on disk for my Onedrive (formerly skydrive) folder.




^Actually, I do this instead of selective sync, I can still see the files but they aren't downloaded until I need them.

 

Sounds interesting, unless I get on a flight and want a file I don't have.

Any advice for a technical phone interview? A Rackspace tech is calling me at 9 tomorrow morning and I'm super nervous. I've only interviewed twice in my life, and was successful both times, but a technical interview has my stomach in knots. Any advice for a noob?

I thought computers where 'because aliens' 5 months ago so that's my noob status

 

1. Believe in yourself
2. Communicate clearly
3. Don't be afraid to ask questions
4. Don't be afraid to not have answers
5. Know the position and company as well as you can

 

I am guessing a "technical interview" will involve some aspect of testing your knowledge by presenting you with technical situations/scenarios you may face at Rackspace. Try to anticipate those scenarios and prepare to discuss the possible solutions.

I would avoid asking lot's of clarifying questions to any technical scenarios, rather take the opportunity to expound. "If X, then I would do Y, but if W, then I would consider P or Q since they are more cost/time effective..."

A lot of your answer is simply to show your understanding, not to actually solve an issue they are having.

It really depends on the interviewer. Some will just ask textbook type questions. Others can be real dicks and be out to prove they know more than you. That happened to me once when I interviewed at Amazon. What bunch of overworked cocksuckers that work there. If you get one that's an asshole you don't want to work there anyway.

FWIW, you should do you own research on Rackspace. I think I read that they might be for sale.

One question I always ask the techs if the manager isn't there, "Do you like working here?" I may also ask them if they work a lot of overtime/weekends.

I told the Amazon manager that working 60 hours a week just meant that you were inefficient. He didn't seem to like that comment. Interviews can be fun once you decide that it's in the toilet.

 

^^^ Yup, if it gets to that point, just mention that you find that "Format C:" is a great problem solver
