I started out doing VC++/MFC/ASP/COM stuff, and did that for about 6 years.
I switched to Java about 3 years ago and have never looked back. It's a much more elegant language, and it allows you to develop efficiently without encouraging bad coding practices like some MS environments do.
I have looked at .NET and have been thoroughly unimpressed. Most of it is just trying to catch up with what J2EE has offered for the last 2 years. There's nothing really revolutionary there - and it's STILL not even cross platform (I know, they are promising to make it cross platform in the future, but I'll believe it when I see it.)

I'm a consultant, and I actually started out doing more strategy consulting work. When the market turned ugly, the need for strategy work died; so, the firm asked me to do some Technology work. I started out with Microsoft products, but recently I've been working with Oracle and Sun products. I must say I'm a much bigger fan of the Microsoft products. Everything was much more user friendly especially development.
ms... While its still hard to find good devs, it's turned ordinary guys
like me (formally grunt work with access) into a really good dev
look-a-like. Plus, for a company it's amazingly easy to find decent
level employees.
