Angry Printer sharing is driving me crazy!!

Hope somebody here can help. My problem with the sharing is that whenever I attempt to access a printer share (or any share, actually) using another computer on the network, the computer prompts me to log on to the computer hosting the shared printer. I can't figure out how to stop this. What the hell am I doing wrong? My "host" computer is running XP Pro, 2 are running XP home, and the last one is running Vista Premium. When I logon, the share works fine but I don't want to have to log on everytime someone wants to print from the other computers. The same problem with all of them.

I don't have an answer - my network and printers are set up properly, and I have no idea how it was done other than me following the instructions.

I have three Windows XP Pro SP2 and one OpenSuse Linux machine (using Samba obviously) all accessing various shares on each other and have never had this problem.

Are you checking the "remember my password" box when logging into the host from a remote machine? Be sure to do this first.

There is a method to allow users to access a share without a password, but unless your host is well protected behind a firewall I don't recommend it.

1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

Again I really don't recommend changing the local policy.

When you share the printer, go to the permissions and open it all up (Guest and Anonymous).

Get a print server

Or just share it. Are you saying you don't want to computer ON at all? I have a PC thats always on that I plugged my printer into. I don't think its always logged on? Since it has no monitor or keyboard and I only access it through remote desktop.

What exactly is happening? Is it asking you for a logon and password? Or is it just not working? Do you not want the computer on?

I have the printer shared on the main computer. It's on but when I try to print from another computer on the network, I get a log on prompt (not the main pc, one of the other ones) before it let's me access the printer. Once I log on I can print but I don't want to have to log on every time the other computers want to print.

Go to control panel on the computer the printer is installed on, right click and go to properties, then go to the security tab, then if the user "Everyone" is not there, press Add and then type the user "Everyone" and set what they can do "print, manage documents, manage printers" blah blah blah

Basically what Whiskers said.

I've never had this problem. Once I've installed a shared/networked printer on a given computer, it's been happy. Like others have said, check the printer's share permissions on the host and make sure the user "Everyone" is allowed to access it.

What OS is the "main computer" running?

Another alternative is to make identical usernames (and passwords) on all the machines involved and set only the usernames you want in the share permissions. Not a terribly practical solution 90% of the time but it's how you would do it if you were in a situation such as not wanting kids using the printer or something similar.

XP Pro. The printer is shared to Everyone which is why this is driving me crazy. I checked the permissions and removed any restrictions already. Logically, it should work without requiring the other user to logon to the main computer.

Unplug from the grid, buy a second printer or printserver, or drink more and care less.

Do you have to add the printer each time in printers and faxes?

Nope, it's added but the computers don't have access to the printer unless they login in first.

You could pick up a wireless print server like this one. If your printer is older (does not connect via USB), you could pick up a wired one like this.

...Unless you find a printer with wireless networking support built-in for less than $50 (and it produces the same or better quality prints than your old printer), then do that. I haven't shopped for one in a long while so I don't know how much they go for.

logical doesn't always work in XP.

what i do:

Main workstation (p4 + hp printer), usernames in the p4 corresponding to usernames i have set up on all the other workstations, with passwords. share it and then you just need to make sure that the username on your workstation accessing the share is on the server.

P4 - usernames on the system are abc, abc1, abc3
P3 - username is auto-logon w/ abc1.
