Printer sharing is driving me crazy!!
Hope somebody here can help. My problem with the sharing is that whenever I attempt to access a printer share (or any share, actually) using another computer on the network, the computer prompts me to log on to the computer hosting the shared printer. I can't figure out how to stop this. What the hell am I doing wrong? My "host" computer is running XP Pro, 2 are running XP home, and the last one is running Vista Premium. When I logon, the share works fine but I don't want to have to log on everytime someone wants to print from the other computers. The same problem with all of them.

I have three Windows XP Pro SP2 and one OpenSuse Linux machine (using Samba obviously) all accessing various shares on each other and have never had this problem.
Are you checking the "remember my password" box when logging into the host from a remote machine? Be sure to do this first.
There is a method to allow users to access a share without a password, but unless your host is well protected behind a firewall I don't recommend it.
1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.
Again I really don't recommend changing the local policy.

Get a print server
Or just share it. Are you saying you don't want to computer ON at all? I have a PC thats always on that I plugged my printer into. I don't think its always logged on? Since it has no monitor or keyboard and I only access it through remote desktop.
What exactly is happening? Is it asking you for a logon and password? Or is it just not working? Do you not want the computer on?

Once I log on I can print but I don't want to have to log on every time the other computers want to print.
Basically what Whiskers said.

I've never had this problem. Once I've installed a shared/networked printer on a given computer, it's been happy. Like others have said, check the printer's share permissions on the host and make sure the user "Everyone" is allowed to access it.
What OS is the "main computer" running?

Another alternative is to make identical usernames (and passwords) on all the machines involved and set only the usernames you want in the share permissions. Not a terribly practical solution 90% of the time but it's how you would do it if you were in a situation such as not wanting kids using the printer or something similar.

...Unless you find a printer with wireless networking support built-in for less than $50 (and it produces the same or better quality prints than your old printer), then do that. I haven't shopped for one in a long while so I don't know how much they go for.

logical doesn't always work in XP.
what i do:
Main workstation (p4 + hp printer), usernames in the p4 corresponding to usernames i have set up on all the other workstations, with passwords. share it and then you just need to make sure that the username on your workstation accessing the share is on the server.
P4 - usernames on the system are abc, abc1, abc3
P3 - username is auto-logon w/ abc1.
