firewire 400 is gone from both models. Only fw800 now on the MBP.

That could only bone you if didnt buy triple interface drives, and only got FW400 drives (and someone like you coming from OC probably used usb 2 anyway)...but there is an adapter cable, so its not a big deal.

They made it so all your ports are now on one side inside of split between both. And on the MBP the optical drive was moved from the front to the side.

Depends on which model I've added RAM and upgraded the HD on the now last gen MacBook and it was easy. Take out the battery and there's 3 screws along the side of the battery bay, remove those and the little metal cover and you've got acces to the RAM and HD bay. I've taken apart an old Ti Powerbook and Aluminum and I beleive you have to take apart the whole bottom panel to acces the HD and RAM but I'm not certain.

Oh yeah, I forgot I did that on my fiancees and her sisters macbooks. Easy as pie.

On the older Ti powerbooks you just have to remove the keyboard which was pie.

Andon the Al powerbook its a little door on the bottom.

Watching the keynote. on the MBP the HD is right by the battery, take out the bat...you can just take out the HD...They made it sound like you basically have "hot swappable" drives in a sense.

Thank Effing God.

I am so tired of prying F2 and F10 off the damn keyboard, or snapping clips around the keyboard... And it would be wonderful if Apple would decide to use ONE damn screw size for all screws needed to be removed to access the HDD.

I swear someone needs to help Apple with "case opening" design issues for laptops and the Mini. I have a putty knife I use to get Minis open. A putty knife. Sounds like they may have finally conquered the laptop issue.

Don't flame me... I am probably < 6months out from a MBP, but unlike Jobs, I acknowledge that nothing is perfect.

And +1 for a freaking dock.

I have counted 17 different screw types just to get the HDD out of an older MBP. 17!

As far as the putty knife is concerned, scroll halfway down this MacWorld page:

i'm going to try and replace the harddrive in my old ibook. The instructions are like 20 pages long, and you need a screw guide or else you never put it back together.

Should be interesting. Hopefully I don't waste like $60 in parts, but I figure that is better than having essentially a big paperweight, and having it professionally replaced, would probably cost as much as the laptop is worth now. Not sure I'd use it much if I got a new macbook though. I was thinking i'd get something bigger and use the ibook as a travel laptop, but I think the specs on the macbook are good enough for me.

I just picked up a new MBP a few months ago. The new black and aluminum ones look really nice, but unfortunately I couldn't wait for their release.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't updated the look of the Mac Pro. They need to throw some shiny blackness into that thing as well.

They don't say how to access the RAM, I have a feeling if they're leaving it out then it's not easy.

I use the same tools as that guy, awesome tools BTW!

While they look very similar to WIHA I believe that is a Husky precision screwdriver available at Home Depot for $7

Nope, it looks more like one of these:

I only think that because of how skinny the aluminum tip portion is.

the top of the line macbook is really like a macbook pro mini. it's crazy that the pro has two graphics chips (integrated and dedicated).

The new displays are ridiculously impractical, it would be a very difficult purchase to justify. You can essentily only use it with a new macbook. They are still selling the old displays. But honestly, who buys apple displays? They are just so much more expensive than the competition.

My dell 30" was half the price and works pretty good.

Paint it silver, put a lighted apple logo on it. The only connector on the front would be for the docking port. All other cables/connections would be at the back. They could very easily make it in such a way that the sides open up allowing you to channel wires through the openings to connect to the ports at the back.

A dock design I think would be a walk in the park compared to the designs they've come up with for all their desktops, notebooks, monitors and other products.

dang the educational discount is only like $50 on the baseline MB, and $100 on the 2.4

I guess I was used to looking at the $200 off the MBP from before.

i'm almost tempted to get the SSD I'm glad it came down from $1500, but still ~$500 is a lot for a harddrive, especially if it is easy to replace down the road. I'm sure SSD will continue to get cheaper and cheaper. I remember seeing $1000 for like a 4GB flash drive back in the day

Fatal error for Apple, IMHO. No FW on the Macbook is just dumb. No FW Target Disk Mode which has saved my ass many times before and what about all those video cameras that have a FW interface?

Oooops.

For those of you talking commenting on the new Cinema Display, are you comparing it to another LED backlit model? I took a peek on Dell's site and it didn't appear that any of their 24" are LED backlit. If they are, they did a crappy job of noting it.

I wouldn't guess so.
Being the relatively new and more expensive technology that LED Backlighting is, and considering the fact that Dell generally prides themselves in being affordable, I'm guess nay on them having any.

I thought Sammy and NEC were making LED backlit monitors but I just took a look and didn't see anything. Perhaps these two are only doing OEM panels. Eizo has a new 24" model that's LED backlit which goes for $790.

Someone earlier mentioned trying to use the live.com 30% offer. Would you be able to buy an apple giftcard on ebay, save the 30% or whatever, then use that in the educational store for extra savings?

*edit* just checked ebay
people are selling $500 gift cards for like $550-$570 and advertising you can "save" 20 or 30%. I guess it would save you money in the long run, but what a joke . Can I put up a $1000 in cash on ebay for $1200, telling people to use microsoft live.

I'm not sure if the Apple display is the first LED backlit monitor but I know dell is still CCFL. Also is LED just for the 24in model they never mentioned the 30in which leads me to believe it's still CCFl. Finally, I'll say that Apple posted the price of the mini display port to dual-link DVI adaptor today and the adaptor will cost $100!!!!

P.s. also the new Macbooks don't come with the remote anymore it's now a $20 add-on.

p.s.s. to what scrib said about no firewire and target disk mode, that feature worked good and made transfering files and applications from old mac to new mac a breeze.

I wont disagree with this, but even apple has been heavily swinging USB 2.0 in their consumer products. And many of those consumer cameras now have FW & USB.

Its just one of those things apple did to say...macbook isnt the pro-line, even though its powerful enough.

I agree it sucks.
