Need help with an old laptop purchased on e-bay.

Purchased this used laoptop for my neice. has 98 loaded on it. the dvd drive does not seem to work. just want to know what you guys think. device manager shows the dvd drive and says it working properly. i put a cd, dvd or any other type of cd media in the drive and the drive says it is not ready. i'm assuming the dvd drive is bad. what else could be the problem or is there a way for me to make the drive work. thanks. it is a compaq m300

Perhaps try to clean the drive with a cleaning kit?

does the drive spin when u put a disc in? it may be a driver related issue, get an updated version of the driver and try again. check if the DVD drive is removable, if it is you can replace it with a cheap one.
