need help buying a laser printer for home
I'm looking to purchase a laser printer for my home since we haven't had one for years and it's about time. First off, I figured laser since I don't do much color printing and it's probably the quickest. I don't know how much replacement cartridges are when compared to inkjet cartridges, but I've had my eye on laser for a while.
I have no clue which type of printer to buy, but being that HP is pretty big these days, I figure it's a good brand as far as compatibility, ease of use, and cartridge availability.
I saw the HP Laserjet 1012 on mysimon.com for around ~170ish. I want to spend no more than 200 dollars, but I'd like to stay around the 150-160 area. I need something that will print relatively quickly, but just whatever is best all around.
I could use any suggestions here. Thanks!

Dell.
They have a 1700 b/w for about $150 shipped when it's on sale(often) and a 3100 color for about $300 shipped on sale(again, quite often). I have both. They are excellent buys and work fantastic!
Keep an eye on Techbargains.com for their specials.

I had a brother something or other - can get any from like office depot... and the toner was like $30-32 and lasted roughly 3000 pages.
Personally I love my inkjet, canon IP4000 or IP3000, www.inkquick.com and the cartridges are 2.50/each if you buy 10 or more (not canon OEM) but it prints damn fast and the ink is cheap, quality is still excellent.

laserjet 1012, super reliable and dependable.
Note, the cheaper samsungs come with partial toners, meaning you'd have to buy a new toner after roughly a few hundred pages. :thumbsdn: And the toners cost as much as a new printer even.

I have a Brother HL-1440 laser. It's a good printer but the design of the toner cartridge is not optimal. In a toner cart there is supposed to be a "waste" area where it puts toner that it was going to use but never got put on the paper. The brother recycles it back into the main hopper. The problem with that is that toner loses is "chargability" when you do that. Eventually you see ghosting on the paper that makes you think the fuser or drum is shot. It turns out that if you replace the toner (which is only about half emtpy) you fix it. I'm sure many people just assume the printer is broke and throw it away.
I got about 1500 pages over 2 years of use when that problem cropped up. I got a replacement toner online for much cheaper than what the stores wanted. Even with that problem I still like it better than a inkjet.
HPs are nice but you will pay for the brand name. The HP toners are more expensive than other brands because each new toner cart has a built in drum.

Bullet Color Lasers are expensive to maintain (4 toner cartridges plus other replaceables)
Bullet Color Lasers are best for Powerpoint slides, Excel graphs, and clipart.

The dpi resolution for B/W and Color are the same as my inkjet photo printer that I print perfect 8x10's on glossy paper and can't tell the difference from a developer.

Nah, I say you pay for HP because you pay for hassle free dependability, no frills driver installation, and toner that is engineered well.
That is the cost & benefit of the HP brand name. What's sweet about the HP toner is that once you are near empty, your pages near the middle tend to fade. It's a good warning sign and you can even take out the toner and rotate it a bit to squeeze out say 50 - 80 or so more pages until it's really empty. So in other words, it doesn't die completely right away and gives you a bit of a cusion until you can get a replacement toner.

Get back to me when you've actually printed a color photo using a color laser and then tell me how it looks just as good as the inkjet because the dpi resolution is the same.

Do all laser printer refills cost around $80??? Expensive considering the printer itself is $100... I just found a deal on techbargains for a Lexmark(looks to be better quality than Samsung, but not sure), for $100, no rebates. 22ppm, and 600dpi. Anywhere on the Internet or elsewhere that sells refills for cheaper? And how many pages would I be able to print before replacing?
I've tried bargain toner cartridges several times and always regretted it - the print quality hasn't lasted, in some cases they have printed horribly right from the get-go. We had the same experience at work and ended up going back to genuine HP toner cartridges.

And for the money, the laser is much cheaper than the inkjet.

Interesting - looks like there have been some good advances with the price and print quality recently. $310 for toner cartridges though - ouch. Is there a site online that shows high res scans of actual output (like dpreview.com does for digital cameras)?
