The only thing it has going for it (other than it's retardedly easy to configure) is you can mix and match drives. But if you're needing speed, look elsewhere.

"This puts the performance just about at that of the Thecus N5200 - a speed demon from about a generation ago of NAS devices."
anyone?

FYI I have been hearing some disappointment with the Drobo units from people who use them a lot. Array failures that require having a second enclosure nearby to rebuild the array, etc... These are generally heavy users, though.
Computer forensics labs using them to store and analyze multi-hundred GB data sets from the desktop.
Investigator may have three or four forensic images of 200GB - 2TB stored in it and would be doing a lot of disk I/O through out the day.

I'm thinking about sticking a mac mini on my main TV and running either Boxee or Plex. If I rip all my DVDs with Handbrake and put all the files on a ReadyNas will I be able to play the movies from any mac in my house with Plex or Boxee?
I've never done any DVD ripping before. I ripped a 30 minute Sesame Street DVD
with handbrake (default settings) and it made a 700MB file. WTF, that seemed large to me.Is wireless G fast enough to stream movies from a ReadyNas to a mac mini?

Probably, because the latest gen does support Wireless N.

Can't speak for the last gen.

It can vary. Anywhere from 750mb-2gb though I've got ones that are more and some that are less.
They vary due to their resolution which can be 720x480, 720x368, 720x272 or a wide variety in between. Basically more pixels = bigger file. I use h.264.
heres my thread.....

So I've got a file server at home running RAID 5 on four disks. It's a large, noisy tower. I'm planning to move to a smaller place and I'm considering a NAS enclosure to reduce footprint/noise/power consumption.
I've got an external USB drive that I backup the RAID array to, and I'll be using the drives I've already got. So I'm looking for something that's quiet, cool, 4-bays, can do RAID 5, uses GigE, and can backup to USB - the old NV+ seems to be the best bang/buck. Newegg has it for $300.
Anyone else have other options that go for under $400?

Cisco NSS 300 NAS now has built in MOZY online backup support. Neato.

I just got my NV+ today. Loaded up 4x1TB drives and I'm moving the data over now from my file server to the NAS. It looks like this is exactly what I was looking for. XP, Vista, 7, and OSX clients all see it without me doing anything.
So far I'm satisfied.

tried to upgrade the RAM in the NV+... even used a brand that was on the approved list... didn't work... just hung on booting... popped the old 256MB back in and it booted no prob... FAIL!!!
it is a possibility... but i am more certain that the manufacturer may have changed something in their chips... another person on readynas.com is experiencing the exact same thing after many others before us had success with that brand...
i may just leave it at 256MB? from wat i read, the extra memory just helps with accessing the frontview?

So I'm taking a gamble. I just ordered 4 Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB drives (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148681). NewEgg sent me an email promotion that included a coupon code (#EMCKEHD24) that brought the price of the drives down to $69.99/ea + Free Shipping. And since I live in So Cal, I can get them as early as tomorrow.
The gamble I am taking is that these drives aren't yet listed as compatible with the NV. They are however listed as compatible with the NV+. Been wanting to upgrade the drives for a while now.
they work.
I'll report back after I receive them and attempt to install them.

Yikes! Those are advanced format drives (4k instead of 512b sectors), I'm not sure if your NAS supports advanced format drives. The drives supposedly have builtin smart align technology but IDK if that will make it compatible.
Scrib bought Advanced Format disks and they didn't work with his NAS and he had to return them
