So had a scare yesterday with a thunderstorm when I thought it killed one of my external drives. It turns out it fried the USB to sata converter on the drive and I thought I had lost everything but was able to tear apart the case and put the drive in my desktop.

So now I bought a 3TB external to copy all of my other drives to so I have a second copy of everything while I build a NAS system. I had been considering one for a while but this is pushing me to actually go through with it.

With all the reading I have been doing I like the Synology boxes the best. I am probably going to go with the 8 bay unit. One question I am trying to figure out is how hard will it be to expand the array down the road? Also I have read a couple places suggesting uses a managed switch to connect to it to make sure that in a power outage that the write can be finished and not cause bad sextors.

From reading the recent posts it seems I should go with WD Red Drives for the best reliability.

Anyone know of I can make compressed backups of the data on the Synology units? Basically can I make backups to the 3tb external and then store it off site?

^^^^ Why no UPS? I have a dedicated Cyberpower 1500 VAC UPS (I have 4 of them) for my Lenovo IX-300D. Gives me at least 45 minutes of run time on the NAS. Newegg has them for $150 shipped....

Sorry do have a UPS that currently gives me a good amount of time for my desktop. I will probably pickup another one for the Synology as well. The managed switch would be in addition and was for the main fact of being able to team some of the connections on the Synology box and then the managed switcf would help with that when power was lost as well. I will have to find the article that mentioned it.

I have the 8 bay Synology unit.
They have apps that will backup to the cloud. but what you want is a 3rd party backup software that can go to external drives.

I have the red drives and only started with 6 drives and can add 2 relatively easily with the unit

Here is the review I was talking about that mentioned using a managed switch.

I am not quite ready to wipe the 1TB drives that came out of the array, but will as soon a I feel warm and fuzzy about the data being perfectly intact on the 2TBs. I used TeraCopy to move the data so there was CRC checking during the transfer so I should be OK.

There is a Ransomware hack hitting Synology NAS. Encypts the data and demands money.

I haven't been able to find any info on what point of entry to the NAS was used by the ransomware. I shut mine off until more info is released, don't want the headache.

There's a variant called SynoBrocker that also calls you out if you try to use your admin powers on it.

But on topic -- that would suck suck suck to be hit by such a thing.

Damn, that's scary. And Synology so far has kept quiet. That means they haven't figured out how they are getting exploited... or they know, but haven't figured out a fix yet.

I haven't enabled the web interface on my Lenovo yet, and I'm not going to now. Chances are, the Lenovo interface is just as exploitable as the Synology is... Only time will tell

Finally some answers!
http://www.synology.com/en-us/company/news/article/470
Based on our current observations, this issue only affects Synology NAS servers running some older versions of DSM (DSM 4.3-3810 or earlier), by exploiting a security vulnerability that was fixed and patched in December, 2013.

Beelzebub, Wondering what RAID format you went with on your Synology?

SHR, SHR2 or RAID10?

Is it possible to have 6 drives in a SHR/SHR2 array and then have them backup to a 2 drive ROAD0 array?

I have heard some scary stories about rebuild times on SHR/SHR2...

Maybe best thing would be to back up to a USB/esata 2 drive array for restores?

You can backup to a second Synology NAS as well. One advantage to that is that the second NAS doesn't need to be in the same physical location.

Wow, I just went back in time on this thread and realized that my Synology is now 4.5 years old. Impressive that they still support it with software updates. It's a little slow but still does it's thing. I had one drive fail in it that WD replaced under warranty.

Thanks, I know the Synology NAS as a backup would probably be best, and truthfully the off site option is awesome, but my backups will encompass data sets ranging from 200GB to 2000GB (that would be the 'per backup' delta even in a differential backup), so over-the-internet backups would take a REALLY long time...

Started looking for an iPhoto (Photos) replacement. I'm giving the Synology PhotoStation app a try and so far I like it. I like that there is an app for my phone and I now have access to all of my photos whenever I want. I also like that the NAS will use Amazon Glacier as a backup.

Do you have a Glacier account?

I was going to set one up once I get my NAS and also order one of their "Snowball" devices to seed the initial backup.

Just wondering if you had an account and what you thought of it if you had used it.

Working for a storage company really made my head spin when it came to trying to figure out a solution in terms of what grade drives to buy, how many bays, what RAID type to use, etc. etc. etc. Might just use a Dell desktop I have laying around to work as a server but I'm going to give it a rest for a while to figure out exactly what to use. If I wanted to really spend I'd figure out a way to hook up an older Isilon node at my house. My last "final" plan was:

WD DL4100
4x 2TB or 4TB WD Red or Enterprise
RAID 1/0 or RAID 5 but rebuild failure probably was leaning me away from 5

I got glacier going on my NAS. Seems to work. Keep in mind the glacier service is really for archiving as a apposed to backup/restore. They will charge you an arm and a leg to do a restore from Glacier. You can not simply restore a single file from Glacier. You need to recover the entire backup set. I chose Glacier because the storage is cheap. I think I would only do a restore if someone broke into my house and stole my NAS.

Agreed, Glacier is seriously "cold" storage, but if you have a local backup this serves as a good "off site" cold storage for data you won't need recovered ASAP. Also, depending on the SPEED you need the recovery data, the costs seem pretty reasonable.

Last time I looked I think it was around $700-$800 depending on what capacity I chose. Cheaper to get the diskless enclosure and then get drives separately. I can get a student discount from WD which helps a bit with that price point.

I have NO idea where I got the $1500 from. You are right, they are 500-600ish.

About to pull the trigger on a DS215J for testing and home use. Mostly photos, music.

Wifey gets pissed she can't see the pics I take for family stuff, vacations, etc...

Plus she is inheriting my old DSLR so she needs to be able to store pics somewhere.

I had a small hdd plugged into my Netgear router but that system sucks.

Cool, my only tip is to be sure to use the synology photo upload app from your pc to dump your photos on to the NAS. That way you will use the processing power of your PC to make the thumbnails. Otherwise the NAS will make the thumbnails and it will take a long time.

What benefit does using Glacier for backup have over something like CrashPlan? I've been using CP for a few years and I do a monthly random file restore to validate that it's "REALLY" backing my stuff up. Sure enough, every time - it works. I can even grab stuff from their app.

I used to use Carbonite but they have limits on storage - CP is unlimited storage, and while I only have 5TB backed up, they've never limited me. I don't have a NAS, just an external 4 bay enclosure (I'm weird and prefer DAS, my main computer is on 24x7 anyways). I'm going to bump it to a few 4TB drives and I'll probably fill them in no time so we'll see if CP will bark at me.

I think the only advantage for Glacier is that is can be cheaper than Crashplan if you only have a small amount of data. I have GBs to backup, not TB. For 5TB I don't think you will find any better than Crashplan. The other advantage for me is that the Glacier app on my NAS is provided by Snology. There is a third party app for crashplan that seems to work though. I may switch to Crashplan, $5 a month for unlimited storage is a great deal.

OK, those of you using Synology DSM, I have a beginner question...

I set up two users in addition to the admin account. All three folders are in the "homes" folder in File Station.

I want admin to be able to view/read/write all files and folders, and that works.

I want User A to be able to see ONLY user A's home folder, and User B to be able to see ONLY user B's home folder, not everyone's. I can't seem to set permissions, since they are automatically inherited from the "homes" folders and if I change those, the user cannot see his OWN folder. As it stands, User A can see all of User B's items and visa versa.

What am I doing wrong here?

One other advantage of Glacier over Crashplan, and it's really a nuance, is that crashplan requires any external drive be connected to your machine every 30 days (I think) to be "included", so if you archive data off the local machine and don't keep it connected regularly, crashplan won't consider it part of your "package" and will purge it.

I don't use the homes folder but I found this that might be your solution...
Synology Forum ? View topic - homes folder permissions
A possible solution.....>>>> After some trials i did the following out of the blue

1) Open File Station. (You should be logged in as and ADMINISTRATOR)

2) Right-CLICK the HOMES folder, then PROPERTIES.

3) Select the PERMISSIONS tab

4) Select the EVERYONE group and EDIT...If the group is greyed out ,then select the ADVANCE OPTIONS tab and then EXCLUDE INHERITED PERMISSIONS.... !!!!If there is not an EVERYONE group, create one, then perform this step!!!

5) Check READ/WRITE sections (all options) then OK

6) Check the Apply to sub folders and files box then OK.

7) again, Right-CLICK the HOMES folder, then PROPERTIES. select the permissions for the EVERYONE group as such..... check Traverse folders/Execute files under the READ section and then OK........ DO NOT CHECK THE "APPLY TO SUB FOLDERS.." BOX

The Group now shows CUSTOM in the right hand column. I have no idea of what it was before.
