Yeah, but it sounds like it's required, if you buy the NAS. Doesn't seem like there is an option to pass on it.

I think they were trying to say that a fee is required to be paid in order to get the service. I can't imagine they'd force you to sign up for a backup solution for your backup solution. They just poorly worded it.

I thought the same thing you did when I first read it.

$1500 is a lot of coin. I can build one hell of a file server for that much money.

Back in the day it wasnt that bad... I was going to say the same thing but this is from 2007.

If I were making a huge NAS, I would do the mirroring. Nothing can make you cry like a little girl, except loosing 1/4 (aka everything) of your 4 disk raid.

Sly - is your unit still running well? I just saw that Amazon is now selling the diskless system for under $500 now, though they are out of stock. This is getting really tempting.

Yup, still running strong. I also don't power it on everyday and I have probably helped it by turning it off every night for the days I do access it.

The prices of these large size hard disks makes it very tempting huh?

I've had a ReadyNAS duo for about 7 months now; it's been running constantly and serves media to my Sonos, computers, ps3, xbox 360. I readily endorse it!

Mine is still running well, too, though I've up-sized the disks to 4 x 1.0TB from 4 x 400GB. It's on 24x7. It does a nice job of streaming media to my Xbox 360 too.

Which streaming service do you use to stream to the 360?

Mine is still running the 4 x 500GB Seagate drives giving me 1.3 TB of space, 40% of which is filled. By the time I need to upgrade, >2TB drives will probably be out. And for under $400 I should be able to upgrade to 4TB (2.6GB realized) without a problem using 4 1TB drives.

I'm using the uPNP A/V streaming service.

Saw the Fry's ad today. They're selling a 1TB ReadyNAS NV+ for $429 or something like that. The actual price you pay though is $529 and you send in some document and you get a $100 cash card back or some shit like that.

It didn't state what brand hard drives came with it and if it was 1 1TB drive, or two 500GB drives. But for under $500, it's not a bad price for an NAS.

I've seen a few at Best Buy. I didn't realize how much it cost until I had a cashier ring it up.

One day I plan on buying one.

Thanks for the bump, I lost track of this thread...

Drobo released the DroboPro: http://drobo.com/products/drobopro/

16TB in a RAID0 config. Starts at $1299 unpopulated.

1TB NAS for $429 is a bargain if you ask me. Especially one that offers so many built-in services and can support 4TB of expandability!

I know what you mean dude, gotta put priorities first. The way you made your post sound it just seemed like the price was still too high for ya.

What if, I dunno, one of your computers or multiple computers all of the sudden develops a problem and you just happen to tell her you wished you had a backup solution to protect the data on your computers.

Thanks for the heads-up. WIll have to check the fine print. B&H is actually selling the empty case for $450, but this might work out if the rebate is in a useful form. Just not sure what I would do with the drive(s) if it's not what I want.

For that price, go with the empty case, dont' bother with the Fry's version.

Hard drive prices are so damn cheap. If you can find Seagate 1TB+ drives that aren't part of that group that were having issues, I think the 7200.12 were the ones having problems, you're set.

Before you buy any parts/supplies for the ReadyNAS NV/NV+, be sure to check out their hardware compatiblity list:

One more thing, Netgear, the bastards that they are, changed the RAM specs on the NV+. the NV+ used to come with 1GB of RAM, a step up from the 256MB in the NV. After Netgear purchased Infrant, they changed it back down to 256MB of RAM in the NV+. I highly recommend upping the RAM to 1GB, makes for a significant improvement when accessing the admin interface.

Here's the link to Fry's.

http://www.frys.com/search?search_ty...readynas&cat=0

Looks like a Visa prepaid card. It's 2x500 for the 1TB and 2x1TB for the 2TB drive (for $550 after rebate)

Still not sure if it's worth dealing with the rebate and the posibility of the rebate getting "lost" or denied.

Exactly. That's why I think you should just get the unit from BH Photo if you can. Also, the build process, albeit as simple as it is, is always fun.

I didn't know they started selling diskless units again. After Netgear bought Infrant, they stopped selling diskless units, probably to increase their profit margin.

Is the RAM any special type or can you generally purchase it online? Also, is 1GB the max?

1GB is the max.

As far as RAM Specs, follow the guidelines on their compatiblity list:

http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=83

I put a 1GB stick of Kingston RAM in my NV, ran a memory test a few times over a week period and everything worked fine. The RAM chip model I chose wasn't on their list of "compatible" chips, but I did ensure that it matched the specs they outlined. I went for it because, 1) it matched their specs, and 2) the price was very cheap.

It's not realy special memory. I think it's notebook memory.

She would more than likely say yes because that has already happened twice. One time for each computer.

It was such a disaster when her HP mini all of a sudden failed and my external hard drive went tits up. I fixed the problem within a few days instead of taking it to Rape Buy.

When then, sounds like you have a compelling argument.

I bumped mine up to 1GB before I expanded the array from 1.2TB to 3TB. The extra memory also significantly reduced the array expansion time from what I'd seen reported for the operation.

I've been using the WD My Book World for a while. Seems like the best cheaper solution. Plugs straight into my router and I can access from any computer on my network.

You'll need to check the model numbers against the compatibility lists. If you want something that will easily expand without having to back the data off, re-format the array, and restore the data, then I think ReadyNAS is a good option provided they are compatible.

This may have been discussed preciously, but for those of you streaming content to your actual television (living room, family room, etc..) how are you getting the content from the NAS to the TV?

Do you have a slingbox/HTPC/Receiver with network capability?

Is there a wired, or preferably wireless device I can attach to my receiver like any other component that will allow me to stream through my home theater setup?

I am interested in music AND movies, and would like to be able to interface with the playlists, or movie selections, even if it is just a rudimentary listing on the television screen.

Currently I have a small older Dell just to act as a home theater computer. I'm curious as to what everyone else is using also..

This is fine for backing up computers to, but not really a good solution for storing all of your files for access from all computers, since there is no redundancy.
