Who is running this OS, and do you recommend it over ME ?

I've been using it since it came out almost a year ago. Whether W98, WME or W2000, it depends on your need. I'm a software developer so I W2000 is better for me. Tim, what do you plan to do with the machine?

 

run my business, design webpages, store the database, email, use ms word some.
And I have a 19" Trinton monitor that is killing my eyes, and takes up to much desk space so I was going to go with the new Trintion Flat FD.
Also was going to put in a 2nd hard drive, to run ghost for back up.
I am on DELL's site now looking at the Dimension 8100....

 

go with Windows Professional. It will run SQL better (I'm assuming your using MS SQL) and is more suited for your needs (based on what you metioned above)......

I am running Windows 2000 Professional on all my computers. I tried WindowsME and was unimpressed with it. 2000 has been 100% stable and I have not had one problem with it. I have used it since it was Beta 2 and the first few versions did suck, but the final product is very stable. I found that ME had stability problems, crashed quite a bit and it seemed I was always rebooting. With Win2K, I reboot about once or twice a month.

I Agree. More memory is a must with Win2K. I just checked and my laptop running Win2k is using 142MB running just a few programs (but it has 320MB RAM). I would get order more memory when you buy the machine because I think Dell gives you a better deal at the time of purchase than if you buy it later.

Darn, I only have 128 megs of ram on my laptop and I just got it in May. Man it's already obsolete.

Bumping up the ram when its RDRAM isn't such an easy decision, $-wise. I'd go with an Athalon personall.y

You guys think it needs more ram ? This is DRAM I ordered. I thought 128 RDRAM was like 512 of SDRAM ? So I thought I ordered plenty

 

If it's not too late, get 256MB of memory. Enjoy your new machine.

 

I have been running Win2k since it was in beta 2. It's probably the best OS microsft has come out with. Its very fast and stable. Just one recommendation, when you install it there are alot of services on by default. I turn close to 10 services off right out of the box. It not only helps preformance but also security.

512 Ram in my p3 866 laptop , runz much much smooter compared to 128 or 256. more ram is a must. Hey i have a samsung 256 rambus ram if you want to buy from me. snook. or I'll give u the ram and u cut me a deal on the headers. hehe just a thought.
