I don't know much (anything) about Linux. But this computer guy as I call him who works with me does. He can't understand the hype. He feels people think Linux is bug free and superior to Windows only because they've never used it before. He says use it and see how fast your impression of Linux as the superior OS changes.

And I've always thought, if it was THAT GOOD then why hasn't it been accepted? You can only hold down a good thing for so long.

I think Linux was cool for a while because people hate Microsoft and will try any alternative. Once they realized that Linux sucked, people stopped using it. GO BILL!!!

These days Linux is as much a religion as it is an OS.

In my opinion, average consumers probably won't appreciate Linux as much as people who are in the software industry.

Linux IS the cheapest way to run applications developed in UNIX platforms, such as HP-UX, Solaris. Of course, you'll need to spend some time porting the code to run in Linux, but that's not too difficult.

Some foreign gov'ts are requiring contractors to provide Linux solutions to replace existing UNIX servers, as PCs cost about 20 times less.

werd

But you missed this :
Given the same HW, Linux has proven to be also the most efficient, robust, stable platform.

Once you get into Linux you'd be kicking yourself for every piece of software you either paid for or spent the time stealing/copying.

Europe and Japan are HUGE on Linux - They are culturally bred to appreciate quality.
Us yanks just wanna everything cheap and EASY.

Personally, I like freedom and choices

effecient yes, stable yes.... usable no. i'm as big a computer person as anyone, had to use linux for my cs major, and i very much dislike it. its unncessarily complicated (RPMs, depedencies, etc. etc.), terrible interface on many distro's, driver problems etc.

I consider myself extremely good at Windows and computers, but Linux was just a pig. I can respect Apple's OSX which is a medium between linux and windows, giving the stability and structure of linux w/ user friendliness and usability.

to me, the vocal linux users are just elitists who want to look down on windows users. if people prefer it, that's great, but when they say how superior linux is to windows, I laugh. does anyone really have stability issues since windows 2000 rolled around, we don't still live in the days of windows 98.
