Laptop question

Buddy of mine has a Toshiba laptop and we can't figure out why it keeps shutting down. If all the vents aren't open it will shut down. Thing is even if it is sitting on a table you have to prop it up on something or it will shutdown. Theres no way the computer should be getting this hot. Anyone know how to fix this or what causes it?

but that doesn't make sense. Whats "too hot" and how do I check the temperature to see if it is getting too hot?

Never heard of a laptop overheading sitting on a table.

If it's not too old of a system, you can try something from here http://www.download.com/3120-2001_4-...rature&ca=2001

It definitely sounds like it's just getting too hot. Why else do you need the vents open?
It's claustophobic? Maybe an internal fan broke or something?

Reminds me of my friend getting a Sony Vaio (refurbed) 2 yrs ago. It worked for about 1 week and then it kept shutting down on him. Finally, I took it from him to see what's wrong. I immediately noticed that after 5 minutes the laptop was running HOT ... uncomfortable hot and the fan never came on. It failed to reboot until you let it cool off for about 20-30 minutes.

So if the laptop is having a temperature problem that could be what you're experiencing.

Definately seemts to be a temperature problem.

A friend told me this week the problem with his Toshiba laptop was the amount of dust accumulated right before reaching the fan. Open and clean.

It's hot because it is a wood burning laptop.

I agree with the others, its probably a dead internal Fan. Hit all the intake and exhaust vents with a "can o air" and see if that helps. Then use a small flashlight and look into said vents and see if you see a fan that aint moving.

And "Motherboard Monitor" is the defacto standard for temp/fan monitoring on most desktops. Should work ok on a laptop too.

I fuckin hate toshiba, as i type now mine is propped up on a book. All this thing does is overheat and turn off. It is a year old and has been doing it since day one and best buy says hey its a P4 they get hot and to get a chill pad. Damn i cant even sit it on a desk w/o it over heating much less my lap like the name implies

Oh as for the dead fan someone suggested, both of mine are going full blast on max cooling so it says and still overheats. It has been to toshiba twice and nothing
