Internet Security Question

I have McAfee running on both my computers

It slows down my computers when it does anything "active"

I have enough processing power and memory in both to handle the load so that is not the problem

I keep both boxes virus free, keep them patched and have hardware and software firewalls configured pretty good

I'm thinking about uninstalling it and just using Windows security

What are your thoughts?

What do you mean by Internet security software? Antivirus software, or something like Spysweeper? Most DSL or cable modem/routers won't allow direct access to the computers.

If its slow, you don't have enough power.....Need to run some kind of antivirus program.

I have Norton Internet Security, but I'm not crazy about it and I'm not positive it even works. I hated McAfee even more.

I mean any "Security Suite"

McAfee, Norton, Panda..... (usually bundled AV and firewall apps)

Naa, that's not it. I've even heard McAffee users with over 2 gig processors and over a Gig of RAM complain as well

Yeah, the thing about active scanners is that they scan everything. I think it is a little ridiculous. And let's not talk about automatically updating..... (who left on the emergency brake)

I don't run any, it's useless. My comp doesnt have viruses. Simply trick stop going to Porn sites, and clicking yes on any pop-up windows. Also configure your browser settings to high.

You may want to try Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. It uses very little (very very little) processing power. You don't even know it is there. I have an older version running in my office. It doesn't have spyware detection though.

My computers that are connected to the net, and run windows all have avg free on them at the moment. Between 1995 and 2006 I seldom used such software and didn't have any problems though.

Most viruses I got back in the day weren't from porn, they would just appear that's why I dont use garbage big names anymore. Most that have been recommended or I read good stuff about are lesser known companies.

That is true. Well, I don't know if The Dougler is a eunuch but the lesser known companies are much larger now, and none of them protect you from the #1 internet threat today. Bots. You don't even know if they are running on your machine, unlike stupid viruses that carry nagging payloads that make them easy to id and remove. And if you don't open up attachments from emails from unknown senders, or run executables with trojans viruses are pretty hard to get.

I hardly ever running anything and I consider myself EXTREMELY computer literate!! I think you have to be an idiot nowadays to get a virus, I personally have never gotten one and during the time about 5 years ago that I did run Norton systemworks I've only been to one site that set off a norton alarm. but that was back in the day of drive-by downloads and what not. Internet browsers and OSes are way more secure. Unless you're an idiot and go to shady sites like russian porn sites or illegal file sharing sites and you don't run a junk email filter and click on all attachments from unknown senders you're gonna have a hard time getting a virus. You basically have to really try in order for it to happen. I'm not saying that there aren't some instances where it can happen without your knowledge but that only happen if your at shady websites and you visit those places then you deserve to get a virus. Most of these security scares are made so people will feel that the product they spent $75 is doing something otherwise they aren't gonna upgrade to the newest latest version if they feel they don't need it.

I wish I could vote NO more than once cause I'd vote for all the reasons listed. If you guys uninstalled your Antivirus software you'd be amazed at how much quicker and more stable your system is without it running and you'd probably never go back!!

I've decided to uninstall McAfee last week. I had too. It is very compelling. I gotta do it so I can know for myself.

Security for the truly knowledgeable user is very easy as Windows, Mac and Linux provide all the tools needed.

Security for the novice is extremely difficult, as the single biggest security risk on any computer... well.. Is the USER! All of the anti-virus tools, anti-spyware and firewalls in the world will not save you if you click "YES" or "INSTALL" on every single pop up box that appears unexpectedly in front of you while logged into an administrator account.
