Paradox

if you want light and portable, look at 12 inch full screen (or 14 inch wide screen) laptops under 5 pounds (with battery)

If you want performance, I'd say go NO BIGGER than 15.4 inch wide screen, 7-8 LBs. I carried a 9 pound dell through 4 years of college...definatley not fun when combined with books and gear.

I like my Toshiba but it's starting to get old and it's crapped out on me twice within the last few months.

My 'lil bro has a Sony Vio and he loves that thing.

And finally, with all the POS Dell's in my office, you couldn't pay me to buy one.

I love Toshiba laptops. I had one that lasted me over 5 years on the same battery!

Dells are good. My wife's laptop is going on 1 yr and 2 months.

She's got an Inpsiron 6000m

I spent about $1400 for it, but I got a lot of stuff for it. It's handy knowing someone that works for dell.

It's a decent laptop, and for school it's more than enough.

But if I could afford one, I'd take another Toshiba anyday.

DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS. He said UNDER 16"....read people.

Back on subject, my suggestion is the HP DV series. I bought a DV1340us last December which came with remote, 14" widescreen which lets me play DVDs and music without booting Windows, which starts thing off much quicker. I paid $1199 plus $199 or $299 for three year warranty.

my toshiba has been in the shop 4 times in the past two years. I would never buy another one. The dell my wife and kids use is rock solid. Most people I talk to like dell also.

Why not try to be a refurbished IBM thinkpad on ebay? You can get some for mid-$400's and a later models for under a grand. They are solid computers.

man this is crazy....they must be just like cars. every one is different. People in the stores say toshiba....some people here say they suck. then some say dell blows then some say the are good....

HP has been pretty neutral, and i think i can get a deal on one.....so we'll see.

Soon enough you won't be able to log in here without a Mac, so you might as well just get one now.

IBM or Toshiba get my vote.

Great Choice. Toshiba has always been my prefered brand. I am posting this reply with a 5 year old P3 Toshiba Laptop I rarely use it tho. Still works great.
