LAPTOP ????'s

I am thinking of buying an older used laptop.... I want one just for browsing the web basically..... I'm thinking something like a Pentium II 200-300 mhz would be good enough. The only real requirement would be that it has a CD-ROM drive. I don't want to spend more than a few hundred $$$ on it.

Any thoughts from all of you IT/Computer people?? Would it make sense?? where should I look?? What do I need to look out for??

thanks,
Dom

I think you'll be disappointed with a 200Mhz machine. Remember web pages are only getting more complicated and all those graphics have to be decompressed by the CPU once they're downloaded. I'd start by browsing Dell Fincanial's web page for lease returns. http://www.dfsdirectsales.com/dfsdirect. You'll pay more than on eBay but at least you know you won't get a box of bricks on your doorstep. Some of them even come with no OS so you can install a copy of whatever you want.

buy a factory-direct one that's been refurbished from ubid.com. they have like 90 day warrantees, and i figure if it's not broken in 90 days, it's you fault after that.

anyways, they have great deals there.

How about a late '99 HP Omnibook XE2?

Pentium II 366, CD Rom Drive. 196MB Ram, 13.3 inch display, plus docking station.

I could sell it for $400 plus shipping with no OS.

My work laptop is a PII 366mhz, 192 megs. of RAM, running Winblows 2000.

IT'S A SLOW PIECE of shit.

I'd really try to stay clear from the PIIs Dom. Try to find a lowend PIII w/ Win 98 and 256 megs. of RAM or greater. No Winblows ME!!!
