Exclamation Help - Windows 7 boots up to black screen

So I've had my new computer for a couple of months now and just yesterday something must have happened.

Whenever I boot up the computer instead of going straight to Windows 7 which usually takes about 10 seconds or so, it boots up to a black screen with a cursor but hitting anything on the keyboard won't type anything. Then about 30 seconds to a minute later it boots up Windows 7.

I have an external HD attached as well and also starting yesterday I get the error message 'USB Device Not Recognized'. When I click on it for further details it says 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)'. - I am guessing these 2 things are related because they both started happening at the same time.

Any ideas what this could be? I don't have a Windows disc because it came pre-loaded on the PC when I bought it. Thanks.

Once running, Have you tried picking a restore point and restoring your computer to an earlier time?

I've fixed black screen with cursor before by resetting permissions using subinacl.

Boot into safe mode with networking by pressing F8 repeatedly after hitting the power button, once the boot menu appears choose safe mode with networking

Download this
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...inityDownloads

take this text and paste it into notepad and save it as reset.bat NOT reset.txt

Code:
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
make sure that subinacl.exe and reset.bat are in the same folder. Then right click on reset.bat and run as administrator.

It sounds like its first trying to boot to your external USB drive and hanging there and possibly the usb drive is bad.

Try booting without the USB drive hooked in and see if that boots normally. Also, check BIOS to see if its set to boot to USB. Then try different USB ports to see if the drive works again.

This did the trick.

I unplugged the external HD from the USB port and the computer booted up just fine.

I also plugged the external HD into my laptop and got the same 'USB Device Not Recognized' message, so this was obviously causing the problem.

However, after my computer booted up normally (and the external HD was not connected of course) I unplugged the power from the external HD and then plugged the power back in and then plugged it back into the USB port and now it is working again. Any idea why it works now? Is it on the verge of dying or something or did it just need to be unplugged and rebooted?

Could be the USB drive is dying. Backup what you need back to the PC and replace it.

I have also seen this issue when the PCI bus data gets corrupted and the solutiion is to delete the hardware key and let it rebuild it.

just a random bump:

I had an issue where after login, the computer would sit at a black screen with a cursor for about 20-30 seconds as if it was waiting for something and then continue to load normally.

Narrowed it down to having a bunch of mapped drives that were offline. Disconnected all of them and now it boots without delay. My guess Windows likes to stop doing everything while it concentrates on connecting to those drives.
